The chat pad was received with mixed emotions from the gaming community.
Some felt it was a pure waste of money because sending a voice message was far easier. Others felt this was genius because trying to type anything using the standard controller was a major headache.
I have this device myself and I say it’s fantastic.
Read why after the jump!
It fits so perfectly on the controller, I never take it off, and it makes sending quick messages and even longer messages a breeze.
My only gripe is that for some reason they made it incompatible with the original headset. The headset that comes with the chat pad has the mute and volume controls on the wire and not at the base. This unfortunately makes it much more difficult to quickly mute your mic when you need to talk to someone in the room.
Small gripes aside, this thing is awesome.
Now, if there just was an accessory that boosted Xbox Live’s maturity requirements…
That’s why the Chat Pad checks in at number 73 in our top 100 Gaming moments of 2007!

I thought it was useful but I didn’t like the fact that you had to use the headset that the chat pad came with. I personally use the Turtle Beach Ear Force X1 and since the chat pad’s mic input doesn’t have the two little inserts next to the input, I couldn’t use my headset with it. I paid $60 for that headset (which I don’t regret at all, they are so worth the price) and if I have to joystick move type to text with someone, I’ll deal with it. Sorry for the long comment.
