The PSP had a rocky start. It had issues such as: a lack of good games, a high price tag, and UMD movies nobody wanted to pay for. Oh, and a lack of good games.  Did I mention that one already?

However the times… they are a-changin’.

Read about the recent milestone after the jump!

Good PSP games are starting to flow, UMD movies are getting phased out (and are dirt cheap), the PSP has a lower price, and finally, it’s been redesigned.

Hello PSP Slim!

Most PSP owners, myself included, had mixed feelings about the PSP Slim (aka PSP-2000). Sure, it’s great that it’s a bit thinner, lighter, loads a little faster, and has an uber-cool TV out, but is it worth buying if you already have a PSP?

Unfortunately, no.

Thankfully that hasn’t mattered in Japan, and things are looking good for Sony’s redesigned handheld. About 2 months after the PSP Slim’s release in Japan, it quickly reached the 1 million sold milestone. This was actually about 2 weeks faster than the original PSP’s release, according to Sony.

It looks like the new PSP along with a recent rash of better titles has finally brought some bragging rights to our friends overseas. This is a huge accomplishment, considering the DS pretty much rules Japan.

So where’s that second analog stick?

That’s why the PSP Slim’s debut checks in at number 47 on Sarcastic Gamer’s top 100 Gaming moments of 2007!

the japanese are not sposed to like consoles that are dark and that is why the ps3 died in japan and is why the 360 is white this time not black. and is one of the reasons the wii sold so well.

i got my theory from a microsoft video about designing the 360

Why didn’t you mention its full name even once?
It’s called PSP slim & LITE (such an original name hey :p)

I think Japanese love everything ‘Lite’, and that’s why the new PSP slim & lite is selling so well.
