Back in August, gamers were still gawking at the PS3’s high price tag, but the Wii was selling like hotcakes. Microsoft realized the time to slash the red ink was upon them.

They needed to take things up a notch in the console war, and take it up they did.

Read more about what they did after the jump!

In a bold move, Microsoft slashed the prices of all Xbox 360’s bundles by about $50. This made a big difference in their marketing strategies as this made the cheapest bundle only about $30 higher than the Wii.
Now if they’d just lower the price on that damn 120gb drive.

That’s why the Xbox 360 price drop checks in at #39 on Sarcastic Gamer’s Top 100 Gaming moments of 2007!

What?! No mention of the needed $50 adapter now needed for optical audio out (ie. 5.1 surround sound)?

You didn’t need it if you bought the $399 model, but when they “dropped the price” by $50, you’d need to buy the $50 adapter to use optical audio out for 5.1 surround sound. And be honest… who has an HDTV and says “stereo is good enough”? Yeah, sure, if you have an HDMI capable receiver you could get audio through that, but that’s frankly quite rare in today’s marketplace…. _some_ people have them, but not very many. For most, this price drop equated to a big fat nuthin’.

I’m still dumbfounded how people slap Sony with the “price drop that wasn’t” label and seem to disregard what Microsoft did here… at least with Sony, if you bought a PS3 for $499, you got EVERYTHING.

Could you??? Tell me I’m wrong.

      I don’t hear anything… that’s right. _I’m_ right.

      Yay for anonymous fanboy accusations.

      your wrong

the cable is optional and therefore not a ripoff and you didnt get everything with the PS3. You were missing a decent game

@LuckyEMS: If you want 5.1 surround sound and do not have an HDMI capable receiver, you NEED to purchase the $50 “adapter”. I say “adapter” because that’s their term. There’s NO FRICKIN’ REASON the thing should cost $50 except for them to make their fat margin fatter.

If you want to use stereo sound, yes, you can safely ignore the audio adapter. I use optical audio on every device I have that supports it, so for me (and MILLIONS like me) the “price drop” was a non-event. $399->$349+$50 = “No Price Drop”.

they did this because the cheaper your console the more likely you are going to get the casual market intrested and i doubt that the casual guys had no idea why there was a price apart from the fact that microsoft has a heart of gold…..
