The Playstation 3, or as I like to call it “the ugly duckling,” has had a real tough go of it during this latest generation of the console wars. While things are looking a bit better for our little ugly friend these days, way back when (about one year ago) things were not looking too good for the PS3. Next to no good games, the most expensive console on the market, a terrible online setup compared to Xbox Live and a host of other issues pummeled PS3 sales numbers right from the get go.

Find out about all the PS3 financial troubles and how they gave rise to a defining moment for Sarcastic Gamer (thanks Doc) after the jump!

First came the Bloomberg report which predicted a billion dollar loss for the the final quarter of 2006. It proved to be accurate when, on March 16th, 2007, Sony’s gaming group posted an operating loss of $914 million for their fourth quarter alone. With a nearly 2 billion dollar loss for the full 2006 fiscal year. Sony’s game division posted another $237 million loss for the first quarter of the 2007 fiscal year. And the trend continued, with Sony selling the PS3 at a significant loss.

Now, before all those fancy numbers came in, Doc, SG’s “Godfather” was already working on a great idea to make a song detailing just how Sony had failed so miserably. The song, titled “How You Killed Your Brand”, was a parody of The Fray’s “How To Save A Life” and was a brilliant piece of satire that really highlighted how foolish Sony was behaving. The song was SG’s most popular (infamous) parody to date and is a major piece of the groundwork upon which this wonderful site your enjoying now was built upon.

Watch the music video for the song that helped start SG here.

The PS3 struggles to this very day, though a few of the SG crew, myself included, have eased up on our favorite ugly duck. Who knows, maybe one day the PS3 will be the number one console and the whole world will laugh at how we doubted Sony (not bloody likely).

Either way, for struggling through wave after wave of financial disasters and for giving Doc a great idea for a song, the PS3 financial losses and the “How You Killed Your Brand” parody checks in at number 34 on Sarcastic Gamer’s top 100 Gaming moments of 2007!
