WoW For Free?

Can a game like WoW be free? The rumor has it that in Red China they are thinking about giving it a shot. The 9, the publisher in charge of WoW China is in talks with Blizzard about making WoW free-to-play. That’s right , communism is finally putting another notch in the positive column, right next to the Che Guevara tee shirts at Hot Topic.

I can’t help but wonder if this might be a step in the wrong direction for China. Gaming is huge in China and this is only going to make it bigger. The Chinese have shown their inability to stop playing a few times this year. People have died in internet cafes after three day gaming binges. I guess the “freedom” of games like WoW are all the rave there because of the choices it presents to it players. If anything the prices there should be raised. I guess then WoW would  rise to the status of crack or cocaine.

On the other hand, this a rumor, as The9 made $42.2 million last year doing what they do. I doubt they’re just going to forget about profits. This could happen if the government would pick up the tab.  I’m sure the government could learn to love WoW, or as WoW is known in China, “Population Control.”

Sharing is caring, Communism style!
