Yesterday’s article was all about sunshine and rainbows, but today is all about the clouds and mud puddles. In other words “The Bad” aspects of the Wii Menu.
I think it’s fairly obvious that while Nintendo’s intentions when brainstorming and creating Wii Channels may be great, the actual finished product is usually far from it. I just get the feeling that Nintendo has been letting all of this success with the Wii go straight to their heads.
Read the rest after the jump!
They seem to think that everyone that bought a Wii has been turning it on every day and using it as their main source of information and fun. I would really like to see the numbers on how many users, who have their Wii connected to the Internet, actually turn it on several times a week and use the Wii for something other than playing a game. I’m willing to bet that number is low, real low.
Here are a few of my Wii Channel gripes:
The Weather Channel - Does anybody ever use this? Aside from the very addictive globe spinning, I just don’t see why anybody would take the time to load this channel. I can seriously open my laptop, open a web browser, and type in weather.com faster than it takes to load this channel.
What Nintendo should have done is implement an integrated weather updater right next to that unnecessary big ass digital clock at the bottom of the icons. It could display the current temperature and condition and clicking on it would bring up a quick little 5-day forecast graphic. This would be so much more convenient and appealing.
The News Channel - Once again, who uses this? It takes almost a full minute to load all of the news stories and then you have to strain to read them on your TV where the resolution is usually much lower than that of your computer monitor. You’re also stuck with only one news source, the Associated Press.
Last I checked, people like to go to several different sources for their news, not just one. Think of how amazing this channel could have been if they allowed you to input your choice of RSS feeds. You could get all the latest Sarcastic Gamer news without ever leaving your couch. It would be like Heaven.
Everybody Votes Channel - This channel is fun…for about a minute. I downloaded this and used it the day it came out and haven’t touched it since. I have a feeling a lot of people could say that. Who the heck cares whether people would rather live on a beach or a mountain? I have no suggestions for improvement for this channel, it’s extremely boring and always will be.
Oh, wait, here’s a suggestion: I vote to Delete it.
Check Mii Out Channel - This one is only a couple days old and popular…for now. Give it a month or two and I bet people won’t be checking it very often, if at all. While there are some pretty impressive look-a-like Miis that have been submitted, there’s only so much you can do with the limited Mii creation options. Which makes me wonder, where the heck are all these people that spend hours upon hours creating these look-a-like Miis? Seriously people, play a video game, or go outside.
The only thing that will keep this channel even remotely alive is the contests they will have. Right now they’re having a contest to make the best looking “Mario without a hat.” Am I the only one that realizes that with the extremely limited Mii creation options that there will probably be dozens upon dozens of submissions that look the exact same? How in the world are people going to be vote on which one looks better when they all look the exact same?
That’s it, that’s all I’ve got for “The Bad” aspects of the Wii Menu. Now if you’ll excuse me, I’m gonna go play Super Mario Galaxy to make up for all of the awful Wii Channels.
Don’t forget to tune in tomorrow for the exciting conclusion of this trilogy when I really take off the gloves and come out swinging at all of “The Ugly” aspects of the Wii Menu. I guarantee you’ll love it, or I’ll refund your money.
