Derek Robbins at 411mania recently scribed this masterpiece on the Top 10 Most Overrated Games of All Time. While he does well with most his picks, the point of interest is what he selects for the #1 spot: The Halo series.
Halo is my definition of a casual gamer’s game. It’s good for the industry in that people are buying videogames, but I think that most competent game developers could probably recreate Halo. Nothing, and I mean nothing, separates it from your run of the mill FPS. The only difference I see is publicity, so Halo gets more credit than it rightfully deserves. Fun game? Sure. If fans of Halo tried other first person shooters though, I’m sure they would see the franchise is lacking in comparison to other shooting franchises.
Right on, man. You’ve explained the way I’ve felt about this game since day one better than I could have. Halo is an average game that does a lot of things right, but it’s so generic among other FPS titles. If the original game was released on PC, and not on a shooter-starved Xbox console, it wouldn’t be as popular among reviewers and gamers alike.

Great article; I agree with Halo 3 being hugely over-rated. It’s fun, sure, but it gets blown away by most modern shooters.

OK WTF. why didn’t all these people slag off halo 3 when it came out why wait until now too do that. Oh its not cool anymore, whatever i enjoyed halo 3 (mainly online) but since COD4 I aint played it for like 3/4 weeks but i still own it, but that dosen’t mean i ve god to say its a bad game to get points from my peers. Whatever dick head remeber back when you where sucking MC’s dick.
Yeah, the Xbox wouldn’t be shooter starved if MS didn’t starve it. Then MS give it an average shooter (other than SR) and make a bomb. They just starve it and feed it to make alot fo money every so often.

Mainly people play halo because of the book it is based of of and the story line, I still enjoy playing Halo, Halo 2, and Halo 3

u know id like to know wut “other” FPS games ur talking about. u can obviously say cod 4 equals it but i dont see any other fps that rivals halo. and iv tried them. most are crap
Well DGX Ultimate I for one am happy to oblige your request! When it comes to the main cqmpaign both all three Halos are god-awful. In fact I’m hard pressed to find a game where the single player ISN’T better then Halo! Just off the top of my head: Half-Life (1&2 also all the expansion packs), all the CoD’s. Thats well over eight games right there, now because I know what you’ll say next is “well thats single-player not multiplayer” think again cuz’ uncle Scott’s gotcha beat there too: Unreal Tournament 3, Left 4 Dead, 007:Golden Eye, Counter-Strike (awww-yeaaah), and my personal favourite Team Fortress 2. All of these games outrank halo in every way I can think of and if you disagree then atleast make a valid point to why halo (1,2, or 3) could possibly be better.
halo is freakin crap, it can’t even compete against *ITSELF*, halo 2 is the best selling xbox game and halo 1 won many awards. halo 3 however can’t do EITHER of that.
You forgot Zelda: OoT, Super Mario, Half Life, Portal, Final Fantasy, Modern Warfare, Bioshock, and Street Fighter…
Seriously are today’s gamers that ADD induced that they prefer GENERIC ALL OUT ACTION GAMES where graphics are important over story and gameplay? Apparently so.
