The Kiss of Kmart

Half the planet is screaming bloody murder, after Kmart’s proclamation that they were dropping Blu-ray in favor of HD-DVD players in their stores. The only way you can get Sony’s exclusive movie format now, is to buy a PS3. (still the cheapest route into a Blu-Ray player that I know of.)

This article spent a TON of time on N4G yesterday, and got up to 720 degrees, as of the writing of this article. Pretty hot news.

To me it’s the biggest non-story ever. Here’s why…

Since when has Kmart ever been a deciding force in any electronics, apparel, culinary, or decorative trend? This is the same Kmart that just threw up their arms and quit here in Houston because nobody shopped there. I mean given the choice between a relatively clean, organized, fully staffed Wal-Mart - and a decrepit, dingy, undermanned, Kmart with the persistent hint of urine hanging in the air, which would you choose?

So why in the hell is it big news that one of the least successful retail chains in history, has adopted a specific HD format?

I don’t have an answer to that one. Let’s see, Blu-Ray gets Blockbuster….. and HD-DVD…. gets Kmart.

Those of you waiting for a winner in the HD wars, might not have to wait too much longer.

Watch out Sony, you’re not in Kmart anymore. Scaaarrry.

So it’s “urine”, huh? I knew there was some peculiar “Kmart odor” but I couldn’t quite figure it out. Thanks for your expertise Doc!

The only high profile Kmart tie-in I can remember was Martha Stewart’s line of housewares… and she went to PRISON after signing on with Kmart… look out HD-DVD guys… don’t drop the soap!
