I just covered this topic yesterday, but another noteworthy blunder in this sad little turn of events happened last night that’s just TOO close to home not to bring up. If you recall, yesterday I ranted about PS3 firmware 2.0 causing problems with both users in general, but especially with owners of Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed. Well, last night Sony thought it wise to release firmware 2.01 to address the various unnamed “stability issues” that were either caused by or revealed by firmware 2.0 in the hopes of taking care of the problems Assassin’s Creed owners are having. The catch? While Assassin’s Creed seems to be working much more reliably, they seem to have simply pawned the issues off on Call Of Duty 4 owners wanting to play online (seemingly the most popular mode of the game to everyone but me).
Yesterday when I said it was important that Sony not continually stumble and do stuff like this, how could I have known they were going to do it within 24 hours? Were they reading my article and just to spite me they did the opposite? Should I suggest that they drive the PS3 into the ground over the next two weeks with a series of problems (hoping they’ll again opt to do the opposite of what I suggest? Oh crap, now if they read this part they’ll know my TRUE intentions and do the opposite of what I meant; which is what I actually said… migrane… THROBBING HEADACHE! I think I’d rather get involved in a land war in Asia than to work out the logic here…)
You can’t rush out buggy and untested software, even if it’s a bugfix that addresses a prominent issue. If this rumor turns out to be true, I can’t see any other reason this issue exists other than a rushed attempt to deal with the firmware 2.0/AC conflict. I guess while I thought yesterday’s rant dealt with the pinpointing the issue(s), we really need to address what seems to have happened as well. Maybe it’s as simple as Sony not realizing that bugfixes have just as much opportunity to add new bugs as fix existing ones. Either way, it’s laughable.
On a side note, ironically I just got a chance to try out COD4 last night on the PS3 (after updating to firmware 2.01 no less). I only played the single player campaign but I need to officially say “Wow!”. If there was more than the reported 5-6 hours of single player campaign, I’d have such a hard time not buying the game right now. As it is, if I don’t complete it as a rental, I’ll definitely be picking it up when the price comes down (or I see it at a good used price). I don’t care for the multiplayer aspect, so I wasn’t hit with the reported problems.
So I ask you, the readers, have you ever been hit by a bug-inducing bugfix? If so, share your story (but just to make it fun, present your tale in the form where every pair of lines ends in rhyming words.)
Inigo Montoya: That Vizzini, he can *fuss*.
Fezzik: Fuss, fuss… I think he like to scream at *us*.
Inigo Montoya: Probably he means no *harm*.
Fezzik: He’s really very short on *charm*.
Inigo Montoya: You have a great gift for rhyme.
Fezzik: Yes, yes, some of the time.
Vizzini: Enough of that.
Inigo Montoya: Fezzik, are there rocks ahead?
Fezzik: If there are, we all be dead.
Vizzini: No more rhymes now, I mean it.
Fezzik: Anybody want a peanut?
Vizzini: DYEEAAHHHHHH.
