I may not have a PS3, and right now I don’t even want one. However, I very much WANT to want one, and Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune is making we want real bad. REAL bad.

The reviews are out on MetaCritic and things are looking pretty good! It may not be the end all be all PS3 game like I hoped, but it’s far from a game to scoff at. Right now it’s getting a 87 based on 17 reviews. Personally, it’s rare that I buy a game that gets less than a 90, but let’s see.

My personal favorite, IGN is giving it a 91. I  also watched their HD video review and all signs are looking damn impressive. They really show you how well this game makes you feel like you’re playing a movie. Lots of games have made this claim before, but this one REALLY seems to pull it off.

Playstation 3 Advanced gave it a 93 (surprise surprise), however Cheat Code Central, Game Revolution, and Gametap, and five others all gave it in the low 90’s too, so they could be on to something. All seem to highlight the graphics, control, and cinematic experience but some claim the shorter length keeps it from greatness.

The current lowest scores are 80’s all from Gamespot, Gamepro, and Games Radar, citing again it’s length some gameplay issues.

Well if you ask me, I say give me 2 or more games as good as this and Ratchet, I might have to join Rothbart in the PS3 fanfest!

I think gamespot just want to do 1up over IGN. If IGN gives Assasins creed a 77, they give it a 90. Now if IGN gives Drakes a 91, gamespot claims is more around 80. I’ve listened to like every podacst out of ign (that’s alot of podcasts) and I have heard the playstation team talk about this. From what I’ve heard from them about game in the past they thought were great….I would trust gamespot on this and rent it.

    • If you’re a “blow through a game to say I beat it” type of person, then definitely rent Uncharted. Hell, I’d be half tempted to tell you to rent Ratchet & Clank Future as well… and Bioshock, and Assassin’s Creed and well, pretty much every single player game I can think of that’s been released lately.

But if you’re the type of person that likes to collect or explore, you’re either going to be renting these games a long time or miss out. I’m currently at 66% completion on Uncharted (I snagged the game early from an unsuspected Walmart that broke street date) and have been having a blast with it. I’m at ~5 hours, 66%. Infer from that what you will. Personally I don’t usually play online multiplayer, so we’re looking at roughly the same amount of single player campaign (or more) as something like Call of Duty 4.

Naughty Dog has done a phenomenal job giving “meaning” to their interpretation of the 360’s Achievements. On the 360, you earn an Achievement, you get a colored icon, and some number of Gamerscore Points. In Uncharted, you do all that (although your treasures are high resolution, full 3D rotatable “treasures” and when you earn a reward, you typically actually _GET_ something. Things like in-game tweaks or alternate rendering modes (ie. play the game in “next-gen” mode where bloom lighting is intentionally overused, to make fun of the gaming industry’s lust for clobbering you over the head with the latest whiz-bang effects, etc). You can also unlock “mirror mode” that horizontally flips all the in-game level data. These aren’t modes you have to start the game in, they’re toggles available any time. It’s done quite slickly. And yes, for those Achievement Whores out there, there are 1,000 “bonus points” you can earn… just pretend the word “bonus” is really “Gamerscore” and that they’re being looked upon in awe by twelve years olds all around the planet and maybe the system won’t seem so foreign to you afterall.
