Reggie Tries to Shut Up the Conspiracy Theorists

Reggie ConspiracyReggie ConspiracyAs a follow up to the huge sales numbers Nintendo posted today, Reggie Fils-Aime (President of Nintendo of America) decided to address all of those who have been claiming that Nintendo is purposely withholding stock in order to ramp up demand. Here’s what he had to say:

Check it out after the jump!

“There is no secret plan to store Wiis in a warehouse to spur demand. The company, after all, is trying to reach out to women and 40 and 50-year olds who aren’t avid gamers. They aren’t going to sleep outside of a store overnight or visit a retailer five or six times. It is literally a missed opportunity.”

When you sit down and think about it, he’s making a lot of sense. Nintendo would only be hurting themselves by not outputting at full capacity right now. The demand is there (waaaay there), so what would Nintendo benefit from withholding stock? Absolutely nothing. They would only be hurting themselves. Unlike the other two consoles, Nintendo actually makes money with every system they sell (hence Nintendo posting the most profitable year ever).

This Wii craze doesn’t seem to have an end in sight and Nintendo knows it. The idea of them purposely withholding units is just preposterous. They have ramped up production from 1 million units per month to 1.8 million so there shouldn’t be anyone out there still claiming that Nintendo isn’t doing everything they reasonably can to meet demand.

Go back to wasting your time with 9/11 and the moon landing all you insane conspiracy theorists.

I don’t necessarily believe in some big conspiracy. I think it’s just plain incompetance (sp?) on Nintendo of AMERICA’s part. I emphasize America because I’m living in Japan right now, and there are plenty of Wiis here. I can go into any game store here and buy a Wii. Used ones are also available for under $200 very often. Someone isn’t doing his/her job right.

One thing most people don’t realize is that Nintendo will ALWAYS be a Japanese gaming company. Japan comes first, America second, Europe third. That is how they have always felt and that is how it will always be. That is why Japan usually gets games released before everyone else. That is also why Nintendo has made sure that ALL of the demand in Japan is met. Now that it finally has been, they are going to start lowering production numbers for Japan and raising them for America and Europe.

Nintendo has a lot of pride in being a Japanese company and they always make sure to take care of their own first. I find it very admirable.

Who would’ve thought the Wii would take off like it did? I’m sure Nintendo didn’t think it would be this bad when the GameCube was their last home console.
I never thought for a second that Nintendo was holding any back, or slowing production rate to create hype. Had they spent umpteen million dollars to really crank production, there’s a chance the demand could have plummeted, and there would be backstock of Wiis in every store. That’s a bad investment.

I dont see why Nintendo can’t pump out PS2s as quickly as Sony pumps out PS2s.. They certainly dont have any trouble pumping out DS’s. I dont care whether there are Wiis on shelves or not, but I do know that the only one I’ve ever seen on a shelf (in Toronto), was priced at $320.. more than triple the price of the PS2..

No wonder they profit on every system sold.
