PSP Dumps the PS3

PSP Store Banner…

Maybe it’s just the bad reputation the PS3 keeps getting, or maybe it’s just one of those “I need my space” things, but the PSP is making one thing clear: It doesn’t need the PS3 anymore. Sony just flipped the proverbial “bit” to make the PSP section of the Playstation Store go live.

One thing to note is that this is the first time Sony’s offered downloadable PSP games. At the time this article was written, they had Syphon Filter: Combat Ops (67.5MB, $9.99), Wipeout Pure (156MB, $9.99), and Gangs of London (a whopping 1GB, $19.99).

One of the chief complaints of the PSP (other than a missing 2nd “stick/nub”) is battery life. The move to digitally distributed games would be a huge improvement in that department, just ask the pirates hackers.

The PSP Store uses the Playstation Network Downloader, software you install on your PC, to manage the downloads and presumably DRM. Since a lot more people have PSPs with PCs than PSPs with PS3s, this was a smart (if somewhat long-time-coming) move on Sony’s part. And navigating the PSP Store with a mouse and keyboard is so much nicer than using the SIXAXIS controller (yes, I know you can use a mouse on the PS3’s store).

With Sony already pushing $19.99 downloads of a gigabyte, I think it’s only a matter of time before we see the entire line of PSP Greatest Hits show up online. Now if they can only keep the piracy to a manageable level or somehow make their “official” method more compelling than what the hackers come up with. Good luck with that Sony!

20 bucks? f that. I will just watch my UMD copy of spiderman 2 again….as I just off a bridge for wasting so much money on a useless portable. Well, that is what I WOULD do…but I didn’t get suckered into the psp.

Your post makes no sense Hollywood… do you or don’t you own a PSP?

I’m not terribly excited if they release downloadable copies of their Greatest Hits games at the same price, but if they’re slightly cheaper, I’d likely jump on a few titles. Longer battery life and more convenience.

Plus, I believe there’s the hidden advantage of theft protection. Since the games are attached to your account, if your PSP gets stolen, you simply log in, change your password, (sadly) replace your PSP and then redownload your games again… whereas if you owned physical UMDs, you’d be SOL. I’ve seen several people get their backpacks ripped off, losing their PSP and whatever game(s) they had with it.
