Well the big boys are getting together again, it seems. For once, it’s not a buyout. On October 30th the official alliance between LucasArts and BioWare on a new title was announced, followed by the creation of a joint website, LucasArtsBioWare.com.
Rumors of another Knights Of The Old Republic (KOTOR) game have been circulating for months now, and this latest announcement has added more fuel to the fire. If you’ve never played either of the KOTOR games, I very much encourage you to give them a whirl. The only Star Wars titles to ever really capture lightsaber battles IMO.
We also have the whispered gossip of a Mass Effect related MMORPG in development by BioWare Austin, with several former KOTOR staff on the payroll. This unnamed MMORPG was apparently one of the reasons EA coughed up some much loot when they purchased BioWare.
While both companies are being tight lipped about what the project is, Lucas Arts’ near total dedication to the Star Wars Universe implies a new SW title is the works.
Wait. Doesn’t EA own Bioware now? Lono’s “Darth Vader of video game publishers?” Are we going to have to deal with the much hyped EA nonsense on what could very well be a fantastic game?
I think not. Lucas Arts has more than enough moola and clout to keep any EA Corporate nonsense to a minimum. This is a blessing if you ask me. All we really know so far is that “a ground-breaking interactive entertainment product” is in the works. Personally I could do without another MMO. Star Wars Online was garbage and sullying Mass Effect’s good name with an MMO seems wrong.
I’ve been playing Lucas Arts games for years now, and they have a history of being very hit or miss, but I think the collaboration with gamer adored BioWare could really give us a blockbuster. Mix BioWare’s tech savvy with the amazing storyline and game mechanics of the KOTOR team and you have a recipe for greatness.
As long as they can come together to fight the dark force that is EA Corporate!
