Is the Orange Already Stale?

November 14th, 2007 · 15 Comments

obox-please.jpgLono will probably skewer me alive for this, but I’m beginning to regret my purchase of the Orange Box. Recently I’ve been playing the heck out of COD 4, VF5, and even “Halo Jesus” … but the Orange Box? Well, it’s just sitting there.

Why? Find out after the break!

There’s not much left to do on it!

Don’t get me wrong here, it’s an AWESOME package, but I think it’s almost too good.

First of all Half-Life 2, which as great as it was, is old. I actually played all the way through it back on the old Xbox. I really didn’t feel the need the go back and play the whole game again. I’m not saying I won’t, but with all the new stuff coming, it won’t likely happen.

As for Episode 1, 2, and Portal, all three are great, great games, but they’re also short, short games. Especially Portal. I’ve played through all three of them, and it didn’t take that long. It was a wild ride, but now that ride is over.

Finally TF2, which is great fun too, but unfortunately, the nature of the game requires you to have a really good team of people for it to be enjoyable. From what I’ve experienced, you can’t really jump into a random match and have fun since nobody seems to be willing to work as a team, which is what it’s all about.

It seems to me that the Orange Box might have spread itself a little too thin. I think when I get right down to it, I would prefer a longer in depth story that 4 short ones. It’s almost like these games were too good for their own good. Portal and Episode 2 very much left me wanting more, but they were over so quick I was left with a “$60 for that?” feeling, even though I knew I was getting a good deal.

I hope we start having some more TF2 SG gamer nights soon, the dust collecting on the box is a little disturbing considering how recently I bought it!

*picks up Supah with Gravity Gun*

      *shoots him across the room*

      *repeats several times*

Personally having 5 short, innovative games is far more appealing than one giant, “more of the same” game.

      *cough*Halo*cough*

Yes but halo gives you ALOT of options to work with accross that *same* game

Not to mention Supesmash and CoD4

Yeah, I would have to agree. As much as I love(d?) The Orange Box I have found that it spends more time on my shelf (or maybe it is the “Halo Jesus” box, not sure) than in my 360. I probably won’t get rid of it. Will probably come back to it sooner or later, but for now COD4 is in and I don’t see it coming out of the tray anytime soon.
Sorry weighted companion cube, I guess you weren’t as much of a companion as I thought you were.

Yet another Flash-in-the-pan “hit”. Developers (and the industry as a whole) are turning games into “consumables” I tell ya…

      $60 consumables. *sigh*

It’s a tough call, but I just went with my gut, i have mixed feelings about my purchase. :)

Yeah…my Orange Box is gathering a bit of dust too. I’d have to disagree that it was a bad purchase though. Five great games…all of which are new to me (didn’t play Half-Life on the Xbox) in a single package. I think the real problem is that there are so many OTHER great games out right now that the Orange Box is falling to the bottom of the queue. Halo Jesus stayed in the tray until I got the Orange Box. The Orange Box stayed in the tray until I got COD4. COD4 will probably stay in the tray until Mass Effect. My only “complaint” is that I’ve got too MANY good games to play.

      Where is lono?

He seems to have no coment, even though he is under heavy attack. (his love of the redbox i mean).

I wonder if he has no argument…..

Don’t worry, I have a sneaky feeling Volkov will be tearing me a new one tomorrow. :)

So give me your orange box, I haven’t played any of those games yet

I really have a hard time believing anyone is playing ALL the games in the Orange Box collection… now… on the 360… there. I said it. It’s a lot of game, but people are largely only playing a portion of it. I’d say most have beaten Portal, a lot have played TF2, and some have checked out whatever of Half-Life 2/Ep1/Ep2 they haven’t seen. Yes, it’s a ton of gameplay for $60, but who’s actually PLAYING all that game?

I fully intend to play through the entire Orange Box, once I get my copy back from my brother. I’m partway through Half Life 2 (first time on the 360, but I’ve played it 3 or 4 times on the PC) and I’ll be moving onto Episodes 1 and 2 in order after that.

I’ve already completed Portal’s “story”, but I’ve still got to do the Advanced maps and challenges.

I agree that TF2 is a nightmare on the 360, but the trick, I’ve found, is to start talking to people. I was hoping that, since most Live players have a mic already, voice chat would be very active across the whole thing, but that sadly doesn’t seem to be the case.

Still, I’d much prefer a low-cooperation TF2 game to the best Halo 3 team match I’ve had.

They are releasing dev tools this week for the mod community for both Team Fortress, and Portal. Half life’s many iterations have always been heavily supported by the mod community. As good as Orange Box is now, give it six months and there is going to be a flood of new maps and challenging scenarios. With nothing to do till Mass Effect comes out Tuesday, i’ll still be playing Orange Box right up until my hot shinny Mass Effect box arrives at my door Tuesday morning.

I guess teamwork is only a problem with the typical Xbox Live bunch. I have the Orange Box for PC and can certainly tell you that teamwork in Team Fortress 2 is not an issue. My favorite servers have admins who encourage it. People usually just play their selected class like their supposed to.

I couldn’t tell you the last time I met someone on Xbox Live who wasn’t some gangsta thug wannabe, a screaming 10 year old twat or one of those obnoxious frat boy types who you wish would just drink himself to death already. I think the casual nature of the average console user doesn’t mix well with online interaction. Call me crazy if you want. I’ve had enough experience with Halo and Gears of War to lead me to this conclusion.

I’ve had more fun playing Team Fortess 2 then any other online game for some time now.
