Game Rental Walk In R.I.P?

If you like to rent games, you might want to start looking at Gamefly. If you like to rent ANYTHING from Blockbuster, your days could be numbered.

Believe it or not, the rental giant with the household name could be going under! 526 stores have been closed in the last year, and layoffs and sales are getting worse.

The culprit? Netflix is most likely.  However, Netflix doesn’t rent games, leaving us gamers in a lurch unless there’s a Hollywood Video or decent mom & pop rental chain nearby.

So would this possible shutdown affect your game renting ability? Would you switch to Gamefly?

Personally, I think renting games is a waste of money anyway.

Free Downloadable demos - FTW!

We’ll see how this shakes down. They could 50% of the stores and I’d still have a bunch in my town. There’s a lot of downsizing that can happen before they’re “gone”.

And frankly, Blockbuster’s Gamer Pass is more convenient for me than GameFly is. If I rent a bum game, I’m about 10 minutes from a replacement.

How could renting games be a waste of money? What’s a waste of money is spending $50+ on games you’ve never played before only to find out they’re worth a fraction of what you paid for them either because they bite or because you’ve played them through once and are done with them. Then, if you decide to trade them in you get pennies on the dollar for them. It’s a total rip off, especially now that the holidays are coming up and all the retailers are jackin up their prices. I’m all about the Gamefly account. I’m playing everything I want to play and not getting stuck with lousy games I don’t. I can load up my queue with new releases before they’re even on the market. If a game sucks it’s back in the mail and a new one’s on the way. You could make the same argument for Blockbuster but I can’t ever seem to get my hands on the good stuff there. The selection is lackin. I’m not surprised they’re having troubles what with the likes of Netflix and Gamefly as competition. Online rental is the way of the future. When I do buy games I buy them straight from Gamefly either using my member discounts at the store or the keep it feature on something I’ve rented. I never pay retail for anything and have scored some killer games for under $40. And they send you all the original packaging and manuals. So you try before you buy, when you do buy you know exactly what you’re getting and you get access to everything across every console known to man at a fraction of what it costs to buy games off the shelf. I’m gonna call that a wise investment.

As I said, I generally play the free demos and do a little research to determine if I should buy. But to each his own. :)
