DX10: About Bloody Time!

There is not a PC Gamer alive that does not know about Direct X 10. Since the release of Windows Vista, we have been inundated with a near constant stream of “you won’t believe how good it is” and “the next big step in PC gaming” statements. The hype has been as impressive as the games using DX10 have been disappointing.

Until now; the end of the 2007 season. I’m not going to get into a Vista discussion here (whole other article) but so far the sheer price of the Vista OS has prevented many people from even seeing a game using DX10. But at long last we finally have a few games that really do take advantage of both Vista and DX10. About freaking time too…hyping something for over a year without anything to back it up is becoming a staple of the gaming industry.

The utter failures of Shadowrun and Lost Planet stand out in my mind as titles trying to cash in on the DX10 hype; only to deliver lackluster, rushed, buggy titles. On the other hand, with the release of Crysis, World In Conflict and CoH: Opposing Fronts, we finally have some games that really do showcase DX10 in all its glory.

Granted, Vista is still expensive (and a resource hog) and the system requirements for these new titles are extremely high, (Crysis in particular) at least they make it worth it. If you actually took the wallet hit and got yourself a modern gaming rig, you’ll see we’re finally at the point where DX10 really is taking gaming to a whole new level.

Sorry consoles, your very best can’t even hold a candle to these new PC games.

Of course it will be at least another year before DX9 goes the way of the dodo and DX10 becomes standard. That said, all the boo hooing over the lack of need for Vista or DX10 is finally just that, cry baby whining from gamers jealous of true PC gaming enthusiasts.

Anyone who says DX10 is not THAT good has obviously never seen Crysis on max settings or the second last level of the British campaign in Opposing Fronts on max. Even a laymen can see the blatantly obvious differences in quality between playing with DX10 and DX9.

Crysis destructible environments FTW!!!
