Duff’s Guest Rant #52: Wait for it… wait for it…

wg.jpgWow, can you believe that it has already been a year since the “High-Def” era of gaming began. You know… because Sony released the PS3 this time last year.  Remember, the HD era did not start until Sony said so…

If the era and the PS3 launched last year, why are Sony fans still waiting?

Oh, that’s right, that’s because Sony has yet to deliver on their promises in “next-gen” gaming , and really don’t show any sign of doing so any time soon.  It really seems as though the best game available for the Playstation 3 is the Waiting Game, which every PS3 owner is playing to death.

Read on while I explain the PS3 Exclusive title called “The Waiting Game” after the jump!

Why are PS3 owners always waiting for the next big game, only to find that it doesn’t deliver?  When the system first launched in November 2006, there was one solid game that you could get with it, Resistance: Fall of Man.  Gamers were dropping $500-$600 for one good game and the promise of the great titles to come.  Sony insisted, and so did its die-hard fans (sound like anyone you know around here?), that all gamers had to do was wait.

Yeah, it has been a rough launch, but just wait until Lair hits.  That game looks awesome, but ten months later, the game launched with a resounding THUD!  That’s okay, no big deal, Factor 5 really dropped the ball and we can’t blame Sony.  The game that we’re all waiting for is Heavenly Sword… September 2007: DOUBLE-THUD (rinse and repeat that sound for five hours).

It’s no big deal, the PS3 will have its saving grace this coming Christmas with Metal Gear Solid 4: Sons of Liberty… What?!?! That got pushed back too… uh… ok…

Super Rub-a-Dub is cool, I guess.

Are you PS3 gamers tired of this crap yet?  When is enough going to be enough?  I don’t know if anyone at Sony has noticed, but this industry is getting expensive; too expensive for most people.  The days are gone when gamers owned multiple systems like they did 10-15 years ago.  Nowadays, most gamers have to make a conscious decision on which system that they are going to buy because they are making a serious, financial investment and they hope that they get a good return on that investment over the course of that system’s life cycle.  When Sony pitched its Playstation 3 to consumers, they pitched it simply on promise, assuming that their performance over the last two hardware generations was more than enough.

Well, let me answer one of my previous questions on behalf of myself: enough is enough.

It’s not a matter of when enough will be enough, because that time is now.  Sony, you have had an entire year to establish yourself in this generation of hardware and have done nothing more than to show us some pretty preview movies and the delay of titles is starting to wear thin.  Gamers are getting tired of waiting; we want games and we want them now.

Yeah, Ratchet and Clank is nice, and Uncharted is supposed to be good… but 3 games in the course of a year, THREE FRICKIN’ GAMES?!?!?! You have got to be kidding me.  I, for one, am not waiting. I have my 360 and am thoroughly enjoying the extensive catalog of great games that have been flowing from the system in the past year.  Granted, it took the 360 a little bit of time to get it’s footing, but it is rolling in games now.

Oh well, enjoy your “Waiting Game” on the PS3, all I have to play is the likes of Gears of War, Halo 3, Forza 2, Splinter Cell, Orange Box, Viva Pinata (yeah, I said it), Call of Duty 2, Oblivion, Ghost Recon: Advanced Warfighter, Dead Rising … should I go on?  Despite all of those games, I am so jealous of you guys because the Waiting Game looks sweet… though not as sweet as the Wii’s Waiting Game: Waiting For Online.

Wii people don’t really need to rely on the online aspect.

The games that really need to be online are (Brawl, Strikers, Madden) and I would be happy enough to have some more, but I am not pissed at nintendo for lack of online games.

Besides, nintendo has some pretty good single player games on the market, and they got their footing down really fast.

Can’t say much for sony though.
