It’s no secret that I’m really beginning to hit the early stages of PS3 envy. I can’t tell whether its the new games, or the killer new marketing that’s starting to win me over. So here’s what I’d like you to do. Have a look at their latest PS3 commercial, and then answer a simple poll on our forums… First, the video.

The realizations that the PS3 may not be a steaming pile of overpriced crap or that there may actually be great exclusive games available for it are going to come slowly and painfully to some (Lono, is that you I see raising your hand?) but frankly I don’t know how much it matters what “the other guys” think.

I feel like I’m fairly alone in DESPISING my 360. I really feel “awkward” admitting to myself that I’m having fun on it lately and a game has to really be something special to counter that. Do I care that people think I’m biased? Hell no. I weigh how much stress and anxiety the damned thing has brought me compared to the entertainment, and I’m left in the hole.

So my advice is if you’re impressed or feel like you want a PS3 (or at least want to play some PS3 games), don’t feel ashamed about it. I personally sought out all the current-gen consoles so _I_ could play the best of what’s available on each platform myself. There’s nothing wrong with wanting to play Warhawk, Ratchet & Clank Future, or Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune. There’s also nothing wrong with purchasing multiplatform titles on the PS3 when they’re given equal treatment (check out the COD4 review scores for the PS3 — they’re identical).

I think a LOT of people are simply stuck in the rut that “making fun of the PS3″ is normal. And to that, I’d say “wake up and make up your own mind” because somewhere between jaded disregard and finally admitting there are things of worth about it, there’s a fairly large area where you’re just going to look like an ass saying things like “there are no good games” or “it’s too expensive” or “it’s just a Blu-ray player that plays games”, etc.

I’m really not sure who they are targeting with this commercial. The games they feature are broad in spectrum of potential consumers, but I honestly am not excited for a single one. GT has never appealed to the masses, its a hard core racer for those few odd balls out there that like playing tune up on a virtual car. Its certainly not going to sell a console. Ratchet isn’t a console seller either, and Uncharted, while it looks like a vamped up Tomb Raider, is an untested IP which isn’t going to push someone over the edge to drop a months salary on a over sized black toaster.
What I do find interesting though is they are pushing the BluRay functionality for the first time. Its really the PS3’s only selling point. As much as the PS3 costs its still well below even a low end BluRay player.
Sony has always targeted the “hard core” crowd of gamers, but the only thing thats going to get people excited for this console is a release of one of their flag ship games, Final Fantasy, Devil May Cry, MetalGear Solid… ect. The console doesn’t have these games backing it this christmas.
So while I applaud Sony for taking a step in the right direction, its too little too late for this holiday season. I think the fact that they chose the games they did, to feature in the commercial, really points to the dire straights their current game library is in. Add in the bruised economy, which retailers are projecting will be one of the worst in the last ten years, and Christmas just isn’t going to be a big ticket bonzana this year. People just don’t have the money to drop on a system they aren’t going to get immediate use out of.

@igot99problems - since when is an untested IP unable to sell systems? I got my 360 for Gears of War. I don’t get your point (other than you aren’t impressed with anything and are quick to toss out the “toaster” slam. Congratulations.

as igot99problems said. the consumers just don’t have all of the money like they have had in the past. People are very smart with their money now. Especially with people looking to pay the bills and housing, gas prices. But now both systems have been out. It’s like going to a private school and a public school. The private school has been established already. The public schools is like a in and out, sometimes shows up, sometimes doesn’t kind of school. They are going to look at all the xbox 360 games verse all of the ps3 games. To tell the truth, most people don’t really care about blue’ray. Ps3 hasn’t even taken advatage of the systems blue ray anyway so what is the point. Gaming companies are complaining that it is way too hard and time consuming to use up the full compacity of the blue-ray. that’s why you have so many games looking like 360 games just a lil more tweaked at that. If you want my advice. Buy the 360 wait until the games come out in the summer next year buy it then. So maybe you wouldn’t have a paperweight, sorry for my bias there. it’s the truth. While 360 owners are playing great online games. ps. don’t let the ps3 free online fool you. don’t get me started on the negatives on that.
