Okay, so Sony spilled the beans today. This is earth shattering breaking news. The United States and Canada are ALSO getting a 40GB PS3 just like every other region on the planet. That’s all fine and dandy. We understand there’s no PS2 backward compatibility because we’ve all already discussed the Pro’s and Con’s of that. We know that your efforts to drop the price as rapidly as possible resulted in the loss of the Graphics Synthesizer chip that was used for PS2 gaming. And frankly, we should’ve also known what else was coming… the Sony justification. How many of the stupid Sony quotes over the past couple years are of the “justification” sort. Quite a few. Had they just made their decisions and/or announcements and even said NOTHING, they’d be in better shape. Now we have “new math” from Jack Tretton explaining how customers are better off now and can buy both a PS2 and a PS3 for less than they used to have to pay for a PS3. As a PS2 and PS3 fan, that doesn’t even make sense to me…
Sony removed PS2 backwards compatibility from the PS3 for cost reduction reasons. THAT, all by itself, is a reasonable explanation. Don’t go on and on. Sony’s past aside, people tend to distrust someone that goes on and on and on trying to justify their actions. And Jack, we don’t really need to be hammered over the head with the word relevant.
My advice to Sony: Shut up! Really. Stop trying to make everyone understand your viewpoint or agree with you. Hell, I’d almost prefer you be more like Nintendo. Be authoritative. Make decisions and announce them. Bam, there it is. Question us all you like, we’ll likely ignore you. I mean honestly, I think that’s almost a step up. It really reminds me of the saying “Be quiet and thought a fool or speak up and remove all doubt“.
My question to you (and I’m asking you to put your Objectiveness Hats on): Would you think better of Sony and more importantly of the Playstation 3 or Playstation Portable if they didn’t try to justify all their decisions and just plainly announced them? To clarify, I’m not asking you if they should have done anything differently (that’s an entirely different subject I’m not going to get into right now), just if they had not said so many stupid things over the past two years would you think of them differently? This is intended to spur intelligent discussion… and in light of the subject at hand, if all you have to add is something stupid or useless yourself, please reread the title of this rant.

Or you could just by a ps2 and save $400. That said if Sony wasn’t constantly saying stupid things I would just feel sorry that they’d screwed up this round. As it is I wish they’d die.

Yeah, tretton and baldy with Sony could start a clinic on jackassery… These guys think that gamers are a bunch of morons that need to be led around by the nose and fed crap like this. JUST SHUT. THE HELL. UP already.

I actually think his justification made sense (although I agree he used the word “relevant” waaaay too often). He gave me an objective numerical analysis of why I, as a consumer, am no worse off due to the loss of the backwards compatibility.

I find it amazing that they even bothered to come up with an excuse at all.
Wouldn’t it be a smarter decision to merely highlight the huge number of AAA exclusive titles that are coming out on the PS3 on the run up to Christmas… wait a minute, ahh that’s why they (and everyone else)are still talking about PS2 games
