I recently bought Ace Combat 6, and I’m enjoying the hell out of the game. I’ve been looking forward to playing it ever since I played the demo a few months ago. It hasn’t disappointed, except for one little thing.
Microtransactions. Ack! I think I just threw up a little in my mouth.
When the game starts up and you load your profile, a screen pops up telling you about some of the “cool” downloads XBL has for the game. I thought to myself, “Sweet more jets and paint jobs free from my friends at Microsoft.” This was not the case.
You have to buy them. Yah. That sucks.
Let’s see, you get one version of the F-16 left over from ace combat 2 that has better armor, free of charge. Okay. Cool. They also offer alternate versions of a F-14 and a F-15. There have different paint jobs that are 200 points per and they are only good on one predetermined plane apiece. One of them is a jack-o-lantern paint job on top of the F-14? WTF? That’ll be no good in a few days.
I know the price isn’t much, but why pay for that at all? It should be free.
There’s also another version of the F-16 from Ace Combat 2 for 200 points that comes with no special weapons. This is due to the fact that special weapons were not put into the franchise until later titles. What’s the point of that? Making sure it took extra long to finish a level? Making sure you die a lot more? I actually might have downloaded this if it were free, but I would have had to think about it.
I have a problem once again with XBL trying to nickel and dime me. This is just like the GHII packs, Godfather, Tiger Woods, etc.,
Microsoft seem to want me to have them. Make them free! Did it really take that much to make a friggin pumpkin paint job? Happy Halloween?

Dave, you’re the cheapest SOB I’ve ever met. Frankly, I think you’re right in this instance though.

While this has nothing to do with Ace Combat, it does speak to your point about “cool” downloads which cost extra. I’m pissed that Hellgate London has a pay “option,” and by option I mean if you want updated content, expanded quests, and new loot. Something like this is fine in an MMO, where you expect weekly updates, but in a single player (multi player co-op) game? Fu*k me, come on this is ridiculous. When you are trying to saturate the market with a new IP, why betray your potential fan base by asking them to shell out for the game, and then pay extra if you want content support? Why not just rape the market more by charging for patches? Whats next? Game companies having goons at the doors of retailers to shake you down for spare change on your way out? Hellgate London could be the game of the year (which it isn’t even close…) and I still wouldn’t buy it just on principle.

naw next they are gonna have goons shake you down for your money on the way in. and you leave empty handed that way they can take all your money now rather then nickel and dime you to death later

I have no problem with for-a-fee DLC, but it has to be a “value” to the customer. They’re bypassing physical packaging, retailers’ profit, etc. They should be offering compelling content for cut-rate prices. If you’re going to offer a bunch of paint schemes, make ‘em free or bundle a cubic crap-load of ‘em for 200 pts. I’ve said it many, many times… some developer needs to come along and show everyone the “right” way to do for-fee DLC. Once the industry sees a “good” example (and the sales that result from it) then maybe we won’t see 30,000 sales of overpriced GH II songs but 300,000 sales of modestly priced songs!

Yea I mean the Halloween one should have been free. But some instead they made some of the others free. I think that they should have just made the pumpkin one and the others that are currently free and the rest pay for. BTW use a grammar checker, or proof read your post.
