You may not be that familiar with Hironobu Sakaguchi by name, but this former Square-Enix game designer is responsible for the recent Xbox 360 game Blue Dragon that spanned three DVDs. His latest masterpiece is called Lost Odyssey and will span four DVD’s. An interesting aspect of Lost Odyssey is that it’s reported to have in excess of twenty hours of FMV cutscenes and approximately 6 hours of written text, used to flesh out flashbacks from the story in the player’s own imagination.
Sarcastic Gamer was fortunate enough to be sent an early version of the game for our review, but our luck didn’t stop there. While the game itself isn’t in its final form, the Special Collector’s Edition was in its final form, and boy did it look magnificent and included a lot of extras.

Consider this our “pre” preview of the Lost Odyssey Collector’s Edition. First, you have the actual game, spanning 4 DVDs. Then there is a “Making Of” DVD for each of those 4 DVD’s. As a companion for the game’s six hours of written text, they’ve also included the “Book On Tape” version of the text. Each of those tapes has a corresponding Director’s Commentary tape that explains their thought process, as the story progresses. The 20+ hours of FMV cutscenes in the game are also covered on 10 digitally mastered VHS tapes broken down into distinct chapters, representing key points throughout the story. If that’s not enough, there are three additional DVD’s respectively titled: The Making Of The Lost Odyssey VHS tapes, The Making Of The Lost Odyssey Collector’s Edition, and finally The Making Of The Making Of The Lost Odyssey Collector’s Edition.
We were sent this set on the condition that we fully review all the content provided, so I’m guessing sometime late in 2009 I’ll be able to publish my review, after treating my hernia, but for right now, I can’t imagine a more comprehensive Lost Odyssey experience that didn’t involve a week long saki binge while locked in a steam bath with Sakaguchi himself.
