Not content with cornering the ornate gamer-picture, pumpkin carving market, Kotaku will run a special Ice Sculpture featurette during the first week of December. They plan to expand the world of competitve sculpturing with hope that hardcore sculptors, or “sculps” as they like to call themsleves, can bring their craft to a year round, or more “casual” audience.
Kotaku’s Ryan Croissant explains, “I am so excited! We think that people really love this stuff! Who doesn’t want to look at pumpking carvings shaped like our favorite gaming characters? Keep your eyes peeled on us all year around, because we’ll be covering the “sculps” hardcore Ice Sculptures in the winter and hardcore sand castles in the summer… It’s a year round festival of sculptures!”
Current “sculp” King Dwayne Heidenscheit explains the allure of
sculpting pumpkins, “This is really my time of year. Smell that? That’s fresh pumpkin waiting to be carved. I’ve been really busy this year with Kotaku insisting on putting pictures of every dang pumpkin i’ve carved on their site! I’m actually off to do a freelance job right now. This guy wants me to carve a picture of his old lady sitting on a toilet… Yeah, I don’t get it either, but it pays the bills…”
On moving on to ice sculpting after Halloween, “I had to learn ice sculpting to keep up with the other “sculps” across the country. It’s pretty competitive, ya know. It took me a while to get the hang of it. The thing with ice sculpting is, that it’s not all that lucerative… Now sand castles? That’s where the real money is at!”
Keep your eyes out for Kotaku’s Ice Sculpture Featurette. In the meantime, check out their site for hundreds, upon hundreds of pumpkin carvings and just a smidge of gaming news.
