Katie Couric Clichés Video Game Clichés!

In case you missed CBS News’ hard hitting coverage regarding the release of Manhunt 2, I’m not going to tell you about it because I missed it too. Actually I just don’t give a damn what any news channel has to say about violence in video games, or gaming in general. They always parade out “specialists” and “experts” that are pitted against a first amendment defender. The formula is exhausted and exhausting.

What I did catch was Katie Couric’s Notebook segment on CBS.com. I have never seen someone who clearly has no idea what they are talking about try to present themselves as informed. Katie Couric actually said this:

What sets this game apart is the player can become physically involved in the acts of violence. Rather than just pushing buttons, the player actually wields a knife, an axe, a glass shard to stab an opponent.

Is Manhunt 2 any “realer” than any other game that’s being played? How is killing someone in that game any different than killing someone in Call Of Duty 4 or Warhawk or Halo? What? You think that people really think they’re flying in a multi-million dollar jets when they play Ace Combat.

You’re not selling me Katie.

Her next step was to quote a study about video game violence and children. No? Really?  Yup. She hit it on the head… the dead horse’s head.  Children should not play a game like Manhunt 2, blah, blah, blah. Why don’t we ever say do some damn parenting? Why didn’t she say someting like that.  Something intelligent? People need to know what their kids are playing and be involved. Use the internet to research what games you kids are playing, its not that hard and I don’t even have kids!

You may have been trying to scare the uninformed, non-gamer, but not me Katie. I’m not fooled by your biased and idiotic reporting about a billion dollar industry that you obviously know nothing about.

Just read off the prompter and smile like a good talking head!

There are a couple of points that I have problems with in her one minute rant…

#1. She makes it seem like you actually stab someone in this game. Not that you are controlling a game character who is made of polygons, but you actually take a glass shard and murder someone.

#2. I didn’t know playing video games was hazardous to my heath. They should put that on the box. If I start dying anytime soon, Microsoft will be hearing from my lawyers.

#3. I agree with Dave, where are the parents. If the game is rated M, then who gives it to them? You should be informed as to what your kids are playing.

#4. Why are we blaming the game? It’s not the games fault that a 12 year old kid can to into a store and get away with buying an M rated game. It’s like faulting the Miller brewing company for your underage drinking tickets.

Sometimes I feel like I’m taking crazy pills.

Sensationalism at it’s finest. Katie Couric is a joke.
