If Life Had Lag

October 18th, 2007 · 8 Comments

I hate lag, but then again who doesn’t?

Unfortunately, I was under the impression that lag was pretty much non-existent in today’s online gaming world. Not the case with a little game called Team Fortress 2. (You know that 1/5 of the Orange Box Lono’s mentioned once or twice?) Fortunately, Valve has already created a patch to fix it, and now we’re just waiting on Microsoft to run it through their “quick and efficient” certification process.

The thing is, lag only seems to be a problem in the 360 version. PC players are running along lag free in their 8 by 8 and even 16 by 16 matches! So what’s the deal Valve? How is it you were able to create a lag free game for computers which all have different graphics hardware, but on the 360, where the online structure and hardware is identical for everyone, we’re going slower than a Toyota Prius during a brownout?

This got me thinking, maybe Valve WANTED us to be laggy, maybe they felt lag was a feature! What a great way to increase the challenge! Why should you be able to aim accurately, and actually move?! That’s too easy! It’s much better when you come to a dead stop for no reason, while other people can still move around and shoot you. Brilliant gameplay mechanic! In fact, I think this should be a way of life!

Just imagine how great your day would be if it had lag! Even the simplest action would become a new challenge in your day!

Pouring Coffee Lag – Feel the burn, literally as you struggle to pour your hot cup of joe. (Just keep a first aid kit nearby and wear stain resistant pants.)

Daily Commute Lag – Talk about a challenge! Your boring drive to work will now be full of exciting surprises! You never know when your car could all of a sudden come to a dead stop, and I mean DEAD. (Just be sure to finish that will before you hit the road.)

Eating Lunch Lag – Lunch time becomes a 30 minute show! Entertain all your co-workers as they laugh hysterically while you repeatedly miss your mouth, and get food all over your face! (Works especially well with hot soups and pasta.)

Bathroom Break Lag – Ok this one is just too easy, and probably a little too disgusting. (Just be sure to wear button fly pants! Ouch!)

See how much more fun your day would be? A lag filled life is the way to go!
You know what Valve? Forget that patch! Lag really is challenging and fun!

(Seriously though, fix that sucker fast!)

Yeh I hate lag as much as the next person. I don’t understand sometimes how lag occurs only with XBOX 360.

But I had a look into it, and you know why lag happens. Because of the way a PC is configued, and the way the 360 is netowked, a PC when playing games online looks like any other PC, becuase it’s just using your internet network, but with an XBOX, the MAC address and NAT are different from a PC, so this causes lag, it can be fixed, with some patches, and that’s how when you stop dead, its your NAT that’s going, and people can just waltz up and shoot you in the face.

reminds me of when i was in the gym with a friend of mine. He saw people doing very impressive lifts etc and accused them of having “l33t hax” and standbying.

Needless to say they were baffled….

I’m really hoping the patch is released tomorrow. If it wasn’t for the lag, it would be awesome.

Lag in real life is real. In meetings moments of time disappear and I have no idea what we talked about. Of course, I have to write the notes.

I still haven’t found a game on the Xbox 360 that didn’t suffer with some form of lag.

Bery suprising that a multiplayer only game would not be properly tested on slow and fast internet connections. Silly valve.

okay, I know I’m going to get flamed for this because this is a very console centric community, but…
PCs don’t lag because they are more powerful. Don’t argue this point because it’s just a fact that a gamer pc is more powerful than a game console having more processing power, more ram, faster hard drives and better GPU capabilities. Even the PS3 is only equivalent to a high end system from 2 years ago, and the lower capability systems definitely lag, but the people with those older systems probably didn’t pre-order the orange box.
