Capcom Announces Super Stick Fighter Zero Retro HD Remix Extreme

October 19th, 2007 · 4 Comments

Capcom wrapped up their “Capcom Gamer’s Day” today. The media embargo has finally been lifted. Sarcastic Gamer was able to see all their upcoming games. We’re quite frankly surprised that none of the other gaming sites are reporting on what we feel is, arguably, the most important announcement of the week. Capcom will be releasing Super Stick Fighter Zero Retro HD Remix Extreme to virtually every system currently being developed for.

We got plenty of hands-on time with the game and are simply floored by what Capcom has been able to do with simple stick figures. Capcom has taken their super-refined 2D fighting engine and replaced their hand drawn fighters from games past with super anti-aliased high definition (where applicable) stick figures. I know what you’re thinking, “the stick figures aren’t hand drawn?!” Don’t worry, they’re still hand drawn, by the master artists at Capcom!

One of the artists was on hand to answer questions about the characters from the game and divulged:

I spent 7 weeks accurately modeling Ryu’s thigh segment. It always seemed to bow one way or the other, or it would be too short, or too long. Then finally, one night while trying to go to sleep, I had an epiphany. I practiced drawing straight lines with the assistance of a ruler for two straight weeks. Then, with complete confidence, I stood up in my cubicle, yelled an ancient Samurai war cry, and snapped the ruler over my knee. From that moment on, every line segment was perfectly straight, and perfectly proportional.” He then proceeded to show us his portfolio of over 300 stick figures in traditional martial arts poses.

The artist also provided us with some sample art showing the progression from pre-alpha to nearly final build quality. The progression made is phenomenal and I think you’re likely to be as excited as we are to play this when it’s finally released.

It was confirmed that the title will be at full retail price, so that means $60 for the PS3/360 and $50 for PC/PS2/Wii and $40 for DS/PSP. When asked about online multiplayer and downloadable content, Capcom representatives said they were already planning it on systems that included adequate networking infrastructures. (sorry Wii owners). The game is tentatively scheduled for a Holiday ‘09 release but that day can’t come soon enough in our books.

LOL. Man, that’s so good. I’m a Wii fanboy, I’ll admit, but I’m insanely frustrated with their online system, er–the lack thereof.
