With End War on the horizon Ubisoft has announced its next Tom Clancy project, dubbed Air Combat, with a release date some time in 2008.

In this paranoid, fictional Tom Clancy future an unknown private military force grows so large that it attacks the United States. You, being the greatest pilot ever to use a right bumper for afterburners, are sent in, with an arsenal of modern aircraft, to counter the attack.

Why make the antagonist a private military force? Well, I guess terrorists wouldn’t work, since their “air force” is usually made up of hijacked commercial aircraft, which tend to have a service life of approximately one mission. (That and no one wants to shoot down a 747 full of civilians.)

The one possible draw back is that Ubisoft Bucharest is in charge of development. Yep! The same guys that brought you the riveting Blazing Angels Franchise, complete with aircraft that wouldn’t stall, and a world in which any moron can fly a plane. Can you say “redemption time”?

Apparently, Air Combat is going to do for the aerial warfare genre what Martha Stewart did for raspberry scones. While I can’t help being a bit skeptical, at least I have Kenny Loggins‘ Danger Zone cued up for Ace Combat 6. That ought to tide me over.

Would you fly Tom Clancy’s unfriendly skies?

Tell us about it on the forums.
