It’s an age old axiom that parents often know what’s best for their kids even when the kids are sure their parents are wrong. The unfortunate problem is that the kids won’t realize that until they’re older and raising their own kids; by then, it does little good to fess up to your folks. Just let them have their little chuckle at you going through the same thing (but this side on the other end of the argument).
I often get involved in videogame discussions that will touch on the topic of good parenting or ESRB ratings and such and as someone that grew up with gaming and now have two children of my own, I feel I’m adequately qualified to discuss the topic with a firm grasp of the issues at hand.
What I’m talking about here is legal backing to uphold the ESRB’s suggestion for minimum ages for purchasing games. The key word being “purchasing”. If your parent or guardian deem you mature enough and feel you can adequately handle the content of said game, they can simply purchase the game for you. While that may be an inconvenience getting BMX XXX into your house, in the long run, does it really hurt anything?
