I’ve discussed the affect of hype many times on many different forums. Heck, we’re in the middle of one of the biggest hype storms of the year right now with Halo 3 around the corner (Wal-mart is running radio ads in my area stating they’ll have dedicated Halo 3 checkouts!) But what I’d like to discuss today is how hype is generally a lose-lose proposition. What are the ingredients necessary for a Perfect “hype” Storm? I’d say it has to be something people are genuinely interested in. Say a sequel to a very well received game or a new promising game of good pedigree. The other things we need is some sort of wait. There has to be some time period where people decide they want something but can’t have it. This delay can be a legitimate production delay or a marketing move on part of the publisher to maximize publicity and eventually sales. There’s also a fine line that needs to be walked between starving the people and overloading the people with new media/information/etc during this waiting period. Too much and people might get burned out and you’ll lose your momentum, too little and it’ll slip by the masses and only attract the hard core devotees.
