Panic has spread amongst the gaming universe today, as the first ever cross-platform virus has been developed and released to spread in the wild.
W32.GetaGF (nick named the ‘Shut-In’ virus), has the ability to control when your PC or console is turned on, depending on the time and day.
The virus is difficult to detect at first, because Monday through Thursday, devices seem unaffected. But as soon as 5PM on Friday rolls around, all infected electronics turn off and will not power back on until 2PM on Sunday. We assume this is to give time to recover from any hangovers.
Microsoft is working on a patch for their Windows and Xbox firewall, along with Sony for the PS3.
“We don’t want our gamers to have lives,” says Microsoft, “we want them to keep buying games. This clearly is an assault on the enerd…I mean entertainment industry.”
Nintendo is not the least bit concerned, sticking to their claim that “99% of Wii fun comes from waving your arms around like an idiot”. You can still do that without the console having power.
