Rothbart’s Rant #9 – "Lern 2 Rite" Edition

As someone that’s very active in online message forums, I spend a good deal of my day communicating with others in written form. But lately I’ve had days where I would’ve pulled all my hair out if I had any. Why do people have such a hard time setting standards for themselves? Is it THAT hard for people to use correct grammar, correct spelling, correct capitalization, and correctly leverage their own vocabulary? I feel like we’re retarding our society’s written communication skills to such a degree we may not be able to regain positive momentum again.

Let’s start with grammar. No, let’s start with the spelling of “grammar” itself. When someone calls you out for your horrible spelling and you claim your “grammer” is fine, you’ve just put one foot neatly on the other and shot yourself cleanly through both feet. If you don’t know for certain you’re using correct grammar and/or spelling, don’t boast that you are because your credibility is likely to be out the window so fast they’ll be picking up glass two blocks away.
