I remember my first Playstation. I have a LOT of great memories from that machine. I was cleaning out my garage the other day and ran across it. Actually, I ran across two of them and as they sat there, upside down… I was drawn to the differences in them. My first Playstation actually had standard RCA jacks on the back. All I needed to hook it up to my TV was a standard set of cables… the later “cost reduced” model had a proprietary A/V jack.
That got me thinking… why aren’t today’s systems so convenient and thoughtful? I have my own theory and it has everything to do with cutting costs and jacking up prices on proprietary cables.
I went to look at the back panels of all my current consoles and realized that short of optical and HDMI cables, just about everything else is proprietary. I realize there’s a certain cost incurred by putting standard A/V jacks on the back of a console.
