What happened to the concept of release dates? I’m not referring to the development of a project taking more or less time than planned and a game’s release date getting shifted. I’m talking about the new concept of telling us when a game is done and available. Unfortunately available must not mean what it used to mean because there is some phantom waiting period between available and when you can actually get that game at a store.
I used to work in the video and game rental business (before it sucked; wait, who am I kidding?) and there was a golden rule: New titles are always released on Tuesdays. If there was a title that didn’t street on a Tuesday, the industry took notice. You’d actually hear people say something like “It’s coming out on Friday? You mean Tuesday, right?” It was really close to 99.9% of the new movies and games came out on Tuesdays. I had another job later in the music industry and was surprised to find the same thing. For some reason that was never explained to us Tuesdays ruled and new media would be on store shelves when we opened the door every Tuesday. I miss the good old days…
