There are three factions in this country, HD-DVD supporters, Blu-Ray supporters, and the “I don’t give a damn (me) or can’t afford it (also me).” In console terms, Microsoft plays Abe Lincoln and Sony plays his Rival, Jefferson Davis. One thing is for sure, Nintendo will not be playing John Wilks Booth.
In this Civil War, you’ve got Universal, an original HD-DVD backer, rethinking its HD-DVD exclusivity. On the other hand, the big news this week is that Paramount decided to go to HD exclusively. Now here’s the problem: What if you went with HD-DVD because you are a big fan of Universal’s movies? If they switch to Blu-Ray, you are totally fu*ked. Is that fair to consumers? Then there’s the story about the HD release of 300. If you read the fine print, the total sold between the two was only 100k.
Furthermore, this is now affecting new DVD’s that are coming on the market. Has anyone else seen how the amount of bonus content on DVD’s has dwindled since the new formats have come out? WTF, I like watching bloopers and deleted scenes as much as the next person. Why must I do without so they can put these things in the HD formats to lure me to one side or the other. To be perfectly honest, there are some movies I don’t need in HD, like Accepted and Caddy Shack. That’s a whole different debate.I don’t know why I said Civil war, maybe its because I wanted to blow it out of proportion like the rest of the media does. I’m sure there will come a day when I will upgrade, but until one of the sides wins, what is the point? Seeing how long this is going to drag out, the people who choose the losing format are going to eat it much worse than those that chose betamax over VHS. I guess I’ll just stick to downloading HD movies from my Xbox 360, only four more hours left to get Pan’s Labyrinth.
