What makes a game console “next gen.” What the hell is “next gen?” Does anybody care? Well one guy does. His name is Don Daglow. Double D here is the president of Stormfront Studios. In case you didn’t know, he’s kind of a big deal. In a speech about the Wii, at a conference in Germany, he stated that developers should expand their definition of what “next-gen” really means. Most notably he stated:
“Next-gen hardware is any platform that, upon its introduction, dramatically changes players’ view of the potential for interactive entertainment. If [software] changes the player’s view of what interactive entertainment is; if you think differently about it; if you have a new perspective after playing the game that you didn’t have before, to me that’s next-gen.”
Ok, time to take the BS meter out. It usually works 60% of the time, every time. Hmmm. This guy is full of crap. So let me get this straignt, “next-gen” is anything that we “think differently” about, or have a “new perspective” about? What a crock of shite. So basically he’s saying that whatever you think about entertainment, as long as its new, then it’s next-gen.
I am so sick and tired of hearing about how the Wii is soooo “Next-Generation.” I don’t know what’s worse, people straight up calling the Wii a “next-gen” console, or d-bags like Double D here making excuses for the Wii to convince developers that the Wii is, in his mind, “next-gen.”
Just so we’re clear, I’ve made a simple chart.
“Next-Gen”:
-
Consoles with fraking hard drives.
-
Consoles that play games in HD.
-
Consoles that let you play games over the internet.
Not “Next-Gen”:
-
Consoles that can’t push past the mighty 480p barrier.
-
Consoles that still use “memory cards” as their primary storage device.
-
Consoles that can’t play DVD’s for crissakes.
-
Consoles that doesn’t allow friends to play online.
It’s science! Everybody got that? Yeah, I’m talking to you Double D, Dan Daglow. Ever heard of HD? It’s from the Future!
Cut the crap.
Is Dan Daglow full of crap, or is Lono? Let us know in the FORUMS and sound off!
Please note that it may take up to 15 minutes for a new article to arrive on the forums
