The release of 300 on HD-DVD and Blu-Ray may be the turning point in the Format War. The movie has become the fastest selling high definition movie yet, selling over 250,000 copies since July 31st. The numbers show that Blu-Ray pummeled HD-DVD, outselling HD-DVD by a 2 to 1 ratio.
The movie 300 is a technical tour de force, employing massive CGI to tell the story of the Battle of Thermopylae. Regardless of what you think of the movie, 300 may be the first “must-have” High Definition movie of the Christmas buying season.
To see HD-DVD lose as badly as it did, in what could only be described as the first round of the Holiday Season, cannot bode well for the format. Adding insult to injury, Spiderman 3 and the new Pirates of the Caribbean will be relased in October, exclusively on Blu-Ray.
How long can HD-DVD survive when its competitor releases twice as many movie titles in the same calendar year? Are the sales of 300 on Blu-Ray showing the true colors of the high def buying audience?
What will Microsoft do when HD-DVD goes the way of the Betamax?
