I might be kind of alone on this one, but every time I load up a retro title demo on XBLA I expect nostalgia and hours of fun, reunited with an old forgotten friend. What I end up with is usually about 3 minutes of, “Oh Yeah…” before ditching for the dashboard. There’s a reason for this. As time has progressed, we have raised our standards along with the technology.
It’s no different, in my opinion, than going 5 mph in a Corvette, trying to relive bike riding as a kid. It’s not the same because time marched on. What’s old… is still old. These titles just don’t compare to today’s games. They were incredible in their time, but now…. They’re nothing more than a novelty. With that said, I’d like to know where you stand on “Retro Gaming.”

Honestly, Retro Games are about all I play. Sports, FPS, and 3d don’t really do it for me. You can only play casual games so often before you realize that they are for the most part all the same, and the only genre that really does it for me now days are present Adventure games. When I say adventure, I mean that it requires brains, not dexterity. It may just be that I am not 133t enough, but I don’t really care about games that force me to memorize more keystrokes, or use more buttons on a controller than the average pilot needs to remember to fly a plane.
I still like old arcade, Nintendo, Super Nintendo, and Sega stuff. For that matter, though some wear pretty thin, I even love the Atari. There is a place for nostalgia in gaming, and I am glad to see that it thrives in more gamers hearts than mine. To be honest, the most recent title that I have played is probably Syberia, but I just am not into competitive gaming either.
Enjoy Gears Of War, Forza, and Halo. I certainly don’t begrudge you. I am sure they are amazing games, but personally I am just as happy with Mario, before he could talk. *shiver*
