Nintendo Wii: Reinventing the Pan to Flash In

Like the 20 million or so Americans in 2006, I was on cloud 9 choosing the Nintendo Wii for my future console: downloadable previous gen games, motion control, and of course, the sweet embrace of a new link game which was going to be another 28 days to play on the older cube. We were wed under the yellow hue of the best buy sticker and eloped to a beautiful half book shelf/ entertainment center were we flailed our arms happily ever after…

Its now June, and I find myself in the arms of another console, promising to call and be “friends” with my wiiloved.

What I’m trying to portray is my sadness that despite all the bells, whistles, and other sounds the menus make, there just isn’t anything to do on the Wii. Here’s my track record:

• Twilight princess: great game, “just swing wildly, cause they lied to you about how you’d get to control his sword and shield”

• Rayman: some good games, way better than the Wario’s anyway, makes me want to REALLY strangle those bunnies, “did they even play test these games for difficulty”

• Second opinion: I guess I should have gone with the first opinion, “I’d rather watch the surgery channel, they show boobs ya know?”

• Paper Mario: I liked it, “70% searching commands, 19% menu pausing from one character to the next, 11% kill a guy, repeat”

• Red steel: “honestly, get golden eye, its got better graphics in multiplayer”

• DBZ tenkichi 2: “oh man, you may as well train your own body to shoot a kamehameha, cause that remote isn’t gonna let you.”

• Sports & play: “good lord, is the area I can move my arms smaller than the remote?!?!? Stupid game, I’ll show you! I’ll play it for real…without you…or friends…of hey gears of war; Buddy!!”

The point is that the Wii seems to be all hype and no muscle right now and has been since January. I haven’t played everything out there, but every game has been a reminder of other older games I’d rather play.
