View Full Version : Podcast Step-by-Step
Here's the EASY way to do it, and it just so happens it's how we do it (sort of) at Sarcastic Gamer.
To make your own podcast you will need:
A microphone or voice recorder
A sound editor (Audacity is FREE)
A friend (optional but quite helpful)
1. Plan your show.
Don't just sit down and start recording whatever comes to mind unless you're some kind of prodigy. Decide what you are going to talk about in advance and make a list.
2. Record your show
You can waste half of your life trying to get and keep a skype connection and record it, ending up with a LOT of editing and audio that sounds like crap, or you can simply have each member of your show record themselves locally and send their audio to the EDITOR to sync up. Have everyone countdown at the beginning together to make it a breeze for that guy to line up the tracks.
3. Edit your Show
Please do not submit audio with massive holes in it or endless stuttering (unless that's the joke). Edit out anything that didn't lead to anything interesting (it happens to us ALL THE TIME) and any major screwups. THE MORE YOU EDIT YOUR SHOW THE BETTER IT WILL BE... usually. I reccomend using Audacity or a similar FREE audio editor.
4. ADD THE COMMUNITY PROMO TO THE FRONT OF YOUR SHOW
This is a small short piece of audio that identifies your show as a card-carrying member of the Sarcastic Gamer Community family of podcasts, and helps to promote the OTHER shows that your peers are making.
5. USE YouSendIt (http://www.yousendit.com/) to send us your finished file. Send it to sgcp@sarcasticgamer.com
6. You will get a confirmation and "Air Date" from Dave when your show has been uploaded and is ready for the world. We will release shows in the order that they are received, no more than one episode a day (unless shit starts getting nutty.)
7. Participate in the forum discussions of your episodes and use the feedback you gain from them to better your podcast. it's worked for us so far.
We will be adding some more detailed technical assitance in the coming days, but any problems you run into are going to be EASILY GOOGLEABLE.
But Dave and I are here for you, with a combined 15 years of audio editing experience. If we can't help you solve a problem, we know someone who can.
Good luck! have FuN! I can't wait to hear what you guys create!
JJMAC383 08-25-2008, 12:00 AM HOLY CRAP!!!!!!!!!! I CAN'T WAIT!!!!!!!!!!!! THIS IS GOING TO BE FREAKING PHENOMINAL!!!!!

A Rabid Moose 08-25-2008, 07:02 AM A friend (optional but quite helpful)
What a buzz kill.
darkwonders 08-25-2008, 10:34 AM do you have a link to the audio clip we are supposed to use at the beginning of the show?
paulmess7 08-25-2008, 01:30 PM A friend (optional but quite helpful)
Must have been hard for Lono to find a podcast then, ZING! JK Lono
Eagle Eye 08-25-2008, 01:34 PM Its pretty easy audio city once you get using it, Sony Vegas is also very good but it VERY expensive
Gilarus 08-25-2008, 03:55 PM Where can we get the snipet we require?
rothbart 08-25-2008, 04:13 PM how is sound booth that's what I use and what is a good program for recording a chat cross country that free to I used xfire and it sucked any sugs
The difference between recording Skype conversations (and I'm assuming with the program you're talking about) is that everyone is mixed into the same audio feed. Using the method Doc spoke of, everyone is on their own distinct audio track. Say you and two buddies are all recording and a dog barks (or you fart) on your track and nobody else notices it and/or comments, with separate audio tracks, it can be cut out completely but if you were recording with Skype and someone else was speaking at that very moment, it's in there...
There's an inherent risk that if any one of you hose up your audio, you'll have to record again, but you absolutely get the best flexibility and power when it comes to editing by having discrete audio recordings. If Sound Booth allows you to record everyone's audio into different channels, your PC and bandwidth of everybody involved allows no/low latency conversation, and it's reliable, it may work. The Blu show talks on the phone because there's virtually NO latency in the conversations... ever. We just have to deal with the radioactive field Pacman's PC puts out that makes his cell phone crackle. Fortunately, we're not recording his cell phone audio, that's only for us to "hear".
zinc136 08-25-2008, 04:35 PM Hmm this seems like it could work. I have a few friends that live around me and with us combined we have all of the systems. Now me bein a casual gamer i'd b the consumer in the group that wouldn't know what the h*** he was talking about and would comment on the games based on their description.
Now....Where would i get a mic and i might need help after that if this goes through
photomaster94 08-25-2008, 05:36 PM how will garage band and my built in mic work? (using mac. ftw!)
rothbart 08-25-2008, 05:53 PM Where would i get a mic and i might need help after that if this goes through
I use a Logitech USB 350 (http://www.amazon.com/Logitech-Premium-USB-Headset-350/dp/B000VEH7BU/ref=sr_1_7?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1219700951&sr=8-7) headset. It's comfortable, works well, doesn't require a sound card, it's USB, and it should be $30 (or less) just about anywhere.

I looked at that mic. how do you talk on a phone, and use the mic to record it at the same time? seems kinda squished
rothbart 08-25-2008, 06:06 PM I looked at that mic. how do you talk on a phone, and use the mic to record it at the same time? seems kinda squished
Well, to be honest, I put the right earpiece halfway up the side of my head (which is still completely comfortable for me) and talk on the phone absolutely normally...
The headset mic doesn't actually hang down in front of my mouth, but just off to the side (which helps some with breath sounds and popping.)
Gilarus 08-26-2008, 10:22 AM How do we record with 3 mics on one computer at the same time?
Jarrett 08-26-2008, 10:37 AM Oh, man! This is right up my alley! How much does this stuff usually cost?
EDIT: Wait, $30 bucks? Cool.
I have a buddy who LOVES to argue (Heh, maybe he and Lono can do a podcast together) that lives nearby, so maybe I'd only need a computor and a mic?
slik1000 08-26-2008, 12:01 PM You see when you have three or four channels and there is a noise like a dog barking in channel A...
You edit the 2sec of dog out of Channel A, how do you make it sync back up with the other channels? Because it is now 2sec behind. Do you just mute Channel A? Or is there some way of cutting the time and entering 2sec of blank audio?
pinoypin7 08-26-2008, 01:27 PM Some programs (I use Audacity) let you replace the 2 secs of dog barking with silence instead of deleting it.
Toshi 08-26-2008, 04:33 PM Hey Roth maybe when I get back to Eugene in 2 weeks you can do a guest spot on my podcast:thumbsup:. I know it's a tempting offer from a big shot like me but I accept bribes if you don't think you can beat all the other people clamoring to be on my show:tongue: .
But seriously I'm pretty sure I can come up with something worth airing.
Lono_Lives 08-27-2008, 01:48 AM I use a handheld mic and a corded headset that plugs into the phone.
Guys remember, don't talk directly into the mic. I hold the mic to side of my face so it doesn't pick up breathing or any other sounds like that.
slik1000 08-28-2008, 01:42 PM Some programs (I use Audacity) let you replace the 2 secs of dog barking with silence instead of deleting it.
How precise is it? Say if I Rothbart pauses for 1.3 sec to silence his dog, but leaves his mic on, then returns and starts talking straight away. Can you set the times for stopping and starting?
nathanhale 08-28-2008, 01:54 PM Sweet can't wait to make my own.... But Jesus Doc your avatar is freaking huge!!
NuclearNinja1429 08-28-2008, 03:29 PM Alright! Ill be gettin a mic soon
Eagle Eye 08-28-2008, 03:51 PM If your just starting off, you can use an xbox headset but the quality is not good. My team of podcasters are all using turtle beachs at the moment
palingenesis 09-04-2008, 05:35 PM were is the community promo audio? i can't find it.
nathanhale 09-04-2008, 05:43 PM Wait by more than one a day do you mean like no more than 2 diffrent podcasts a day? Or no episodes of the same podcast?
MeggaMan 09-04-2008, 05:45 PM Must have been hard for Lono to find a podcast then, ZING! JK Lono
WHAT HAVE I TOLD YOU ABOUT ZINGING!!!
I have just the person in mind to help me out with a podcast as well!
palingenesis 09-04-2008, 06:11 PM so no one knows where to get the community podcast promo? do i just avoid it for now because my podcast is finished and i want to put it in it so people know it's from the sarcastic gamer community.
Kiljoy 09-04-2008, 09:41 PM I made my own promo, but I haven't gotten any word from them.
Sorry for the confusion.... Dave is working on the Podcast Promo ASAP. We forgot.
We will post it here when ready
how will garage band and my built in mic work? (using mac. ftw!)
I would get an external mic. The one on the mic has a bad habit of picking up a lot of room noise.
You see when you have three or four channels and there is a noise like a dog barking in channel A...

Depending on what you are using, it should just leave 2sec of nothing on that channel.
palingenesis 09-05-2008, 02:56 PM Sorry for the confusion.... Dave is working on the Podcast Promo ASAP. We forgot.
We will post it here when ready
okay np. i can't wait to hear my own podcast!
8bitBass 09-08-2008, 02:35 AM I already sent ours in. So I guess Dave can add the intro before publishing it. Right?
Daikun 10-02-2008, 09:19 PM A friend (optional but quite helpful)
What if you have a friend who wants to help out, but lives a thousand miles away? Yeah, I know that Skype exists, but it has TERRIBLE quality when it comes to recording.
Does anyone know any higher-quality alternatives?
so no one knows where to get the community podcast promo? do i just avoid it for now because my podcast is finished and i want to put it in it so people know it's from the sarcastic gamer community.

DogsDieInHotCars 10-04-2008, 05:56 PM Hey gang
We''ll get that podcast prmoo centrally located. sorry for any confusion.
For those that want that promo NOW, you can email me at volleyop13@gmail.com. I made a short promo MP3 and I'll be happy to send it to you.
Either that or you can download one of the other community podcasts, import it to your sound editing software of choice, and delete everything but the promo. That's how I did it
monkeychunkuk 10-04-2008, 06:12 PM some really good tips cheers doc but i think we have broken all of them
DeadpoolSkye 11-12-2008, 05:46 PM Where are we supposed to get the opening for the SGCPs? Or does dave just add them in now?
DogsDieInHotCars 11-12-2008, 06:29 PM Where are we supposed to get the opening for the SGCPs? Or does dave just add them in now?
Dave doesn't do them automatically (or 8bitbass for that matter). You can import any Community podcast and clip the promos from the beginning and end. That's how we did it.
Or you can email me and I'll send it to you  pandawatchpodcast@gmail.com
kalem man 01-01-2009, 05:30 AM Are we allowed to make our own opening? I made one I like based off of the woman speaking over the speakerphone in a supermarket...
"Attention all customers: the following CommunityCast is brought to you by Sarcastic Gamer and the Gamercast Network"

No don't do that, for some reason it never sounds right. I DO add the SGCP intro and ending tags as a free value added service. (sorry DD I ended up redoing yours)
ANd making your own intro is just fine, just remember that it will have the standard SGCP intro beforehand (like resonator etc. thanks waffleboy :)
Bohemian Child 01-02-2009, 03:42 AM Thanks for all the tips Doc
