Some guy named Ted from Insomniac Games says that the media is beating the crap out of Sony and the PS3, because it's human nature to take out the guy on top.

After a bit of soul-searching and a staff meeting, we've decided that Ted is right. We do like picking on Sony for reasons that go beyond their lack of interesting titles, horrible online offering, chronic self-hype, inflated price tag, lack of rumble, programming difficulty, and annoying President. As it turns out, we're all just jealous, because we wish it was US that was losing the console war to a pair of less-powerful systems. WE want to invent a genius gaming platform descended from an historic brand and run it into the ground.

We're such haters.

Oh to watch the "haters" over time... *I love to see the hatred turn to dismay, the dismay to indifference, the indifference to hesitant acknowledgement, and then *gasp* praise without a hint of sarcasm...

It'll happen. *Either that or I'll enjoy the pure absurdity of your denial. *One of the two; either is fine with me. *And when I say "your", I don't mean you specifically Doc, there are thousands just like you.

I think Sony definitely does get unfair treatment. I have some genuine concerns about the viability of the PS3 platform that would stop me from paying anything close to £425 for one (~$800US for you Americans), but even I'm starting to get tired of the constant bashing - and I was a Dreamcast fanboy. The PS2 was my arch-enemy when SEGA went under, but when I finally got one I realised what an idiot I was being.

Still, there's an amount of backlash to be expected from the kind of arrogance Sony showed before the PS3 launch. You just don't get away with that kind of hyperbole when you fail to deliver, and I don't think it's any fairer to blame the media for all of Sony's woes that it is to stick the boot in when they cock up.

Besides which, it seems a little optimistic to describe Sony as "the guy on top".

I was going to make this point exactly - I had a PS1 soon after they came out. I got a PS2 not long after that came out. I got a 360 because the PS3 didn't come out... and while I can understand Sony's "don't buy a 360, or a wii, just wait until what you see what OUR baby can do..." - but unfortunately, too many people either got old waiting, or moved on to another platform.

I like Sony - I hope the PS3 is a success (hell, I'll probably buy one when they cost less than one kidney), but for building expectations up, then dismally failing to deliver, they are reaping what they sowed (or some other old saying...)

Roth, you're the one in denial if you honestly believe the PS3 has a snowball's chance in hell. When the two most anticipated exclusive titles for the PS3 aren't even coming out until a year after the console's launch and well after the second holiday rush season, the PS3 is dead in the water.

Game developers are already shifting focus to Wii over PS3. Square Enix isn't developing anything for the PS3 other than FF13 until the PS3 has sales to justify the expense of development. I linked you to the article in the Phil Harrison thread. And while I'm sure your blind fanboyism will try to come back with some retort, it's cold hard facts.

Sony beat their chest:
"THE CELL PROCESSOR IS GREAT!"
"WE'LL HAVE GREAT TITLES!"
"WE HAVE BLU-RAY!"
"WE'LL HAVE ONLINE!"

They delivered a piece of crap with almost no titles, no AAA titles on the horizon and nothing to drive sales this holiday season other than GTA4, which isn't going to sell units unless people don't have a 360 already and even that may not drive sales because the 360, despite its failures, is more economical given the amount of existing titles.

Maybe the media is treating them a bit unfairly, but they deserve it. They created all this hype and failed to deliver. What's worse is they continue to fail to deliver. They keep putting out all this PR bullshit and never back it up. They've become the console version of the military with the mantra of "hurry up and wait".

There's no dismay for me. There's no indifference and there's certainly no acknowledgment. Sony has made a piece of crap and they're getting WHOOPED by the Wii in Japan and the Wii and 360 in the NA markets. And there's absolutely nothing on the horizon which is going to change that fact. I wonder how long Konami will continue to make their hard line about MGS4 never coming to any other platform when the PS3 continues to sell less than 100K consoles a month. I guarantee you that if there isn't a massive upswing in sales, we'll be seeing a MGS4 X360 port being worked on shortly after the game's PS3 "exclusive" release.

OR everyone will be so pissed at PS3 by the time they get their crap together that it won't matter because the 360 and Wii will be so far ahead (not to mention cheaper) that the average consumer won't care about it anymore.

I don't need any fancy retort, your post has enough absurdity that it stands on its own. Please oh wise one, what are these two "most anticipated titles"? Please oh please say Final Fantasy XIII and Metal Gear Solid 4... please! How ironic that you accuse me of fanboy denial. I accuse you of ignorance. Are we even? No, your ignorance wins out. Congrats!

As retarded as you both are making yourselves look right now, the fact remains that FFXIII and MGS4 will be major system sellers, regardless of how poorly the PS3 may perform in the meantime. History has proven that the fanboys for these two franchises are rabid and numerous.

And, hey---who knows? Maybe Sony will use the extra money to build PR robots who can't lie or exaggerate.

What the PS3 really needs to win people over is pretty simple:

1. A price drop to make it affordable.
2. Some must-have exclusives.

I earn ~$35,000 a year (plus my girlfriend's income) and can't justify that kind of money on one system without a bunch of awesome stuff to play on it. Good multi-format games are not enough - if the games are on the 360 as well, why would I bother with the PS3 when I have a perfectly capable system already? Spending £40 on a game alone beats £475 on the game plus a new system any day.
