View Full Version : More Blue News for Blu-Ray
by Jeromy "Doc" Adams
SOURCE: PS3 Fanboy
Bad news for the folks that beat their chest about the number of BluRay players in the world exceeding the number of HD-DVD units. Turns out that almost ALL of the BluRay players are Playstation 3's.
That in and of itself isn't bad, except that a recent study of has shown that only 13 percent of console owners actually USE the system as a BluRay player.
This spells trouble for Blockbuster, who recently made the HD switch in their retail outlets to a Blu-Ray-ONLY business plan.
So YES. There are more Blu-Ray players in the world. But it's a pretty lame statistic. Because only a tiny fraction of them are being used to play movies. In other words lots of players and no demand for the movies. (Cue the Phantom of the Opera music)
This begs the question, what exactly ARE PS3 owners using their systems for? We know it can't be to play games... because there aren't any.
Locke 07-01-2007, 04:19 PM Given this new information, are there more HD-DVD's or are there more Blu-Ray drives? Only counting the ones being used that is.
Lumpydonut 07-01-2007, 07:27 PM I think this is awesome. I believe that it is kinda cool how Sony manages to provide false information that isn't all that false, just a little misleading. Blockbuster deserves it...

If this:
http://www.gamasutra.com/php-bin/news_index.php?story=14513
is the study you are referring to, the finding was not exclusively for consoles that play BDs. That was inclusive of all consoles including ones that play DVDs.
Although that whole study can be questioned because it only took into account 2,000 households. And it is a study by "The Diffusion Group", sounds like a solid research company to me.
In any case, I'm sure that not all PS3 owners use their system as a media player but I imagine it's higher than 13%. Since the PS3 at one point was the cheapest BD player on the market.
ghoti 07-02-2007, 04:32 AM If I had a PS3, I'd definitely be using it as a Blu-Ray player - it's not like there's any games to use it for yet.

I would recommend using it as an automatic egg-scrambler.

Ibn Al Xuffasch already took care of the factual problems of this story. Sensationalism wins again! While we're making fun of consoles, you guys think I could get a good deal on a few dozen dead 360's? I was going to line my roof with them in preparation for Christmas... I figure the flashing red lights will be quite festive!

You should call Xbox and get them fixed for free. Then you would have a plethora of games to choose from for your holiday season. Ho Ho Ho Halo 3 will be out by then.

At least when we get our 360' back from MS we have a choice other than Motorstorm and Resistance to play.
:'(
rothbart 07-02-2007, 08:39 PM It's officially "old" now. There is more to play than MotorStorm.

I notice you say few dozen broken 360s
And that is opposed to almost a few million PS3s that are just about worthless...

Because you focus on PS3's being "worthless" and having nothing to play, yet seem to think 360's are great and their failure rate is just a piddly little nuisance. The reality is that anyone open-minded enough to actually sit down with a PS3 and some of its games (and especially some of its non-gaming functionality) would know that it's far from worthless and when some solid games hit that mainstream gamers care more about (ie. this Xmas) then a lot of what you guys have been relying on for bash-topics will be ancient history... I own a PS3, a 360, and a Wii. If I could own only one console right now it would be a 360, hands down, no doubt... but to constantly bash the 360 as "worthless" launches your credibility so far into the stratosphere that the Russians just went on high alert.
I'm waiting for some more of the "Totally Biased" that this site uses as its tagline because mostly what I've seen is "Totally Biased Against The PS3" Don't get me wrong, it's all fine and good to make fun of them and slam them where appropriate, but where are the freakin' Wii games worth playing? Where is Nintendo's online offering? Where are the platformers for the 360? Why do 360's keep dying? I mean I could make a list for Nintendo and Microsoft of a dozen things that should be mocked and this site would appear to be an approriate place to find something like that... but I don't. I urged Doc to write "Ring of Fire" but while jabbing them he had to point out that the 360 has the best games, that Xbox Live is what he desires, repairs are free, etc. Oh my, Microsoft must've REALLY winced at barbs like those... ::)
So I guess to sum it up, call a PS3 "worthless" and you've just described your opinions to me as well... worthless. You don't have to love it, but give it props where they're deserved. And there are some that are deserved, no matter what you might read on sites like this.

Altered_Weapon 07-03-2007, 12:15 AM Roth makes a good point and an even better rant. I just want to be the first here to say that the reason I like my 360 more than the PS3 is that right now I'M A FREAKIN' CHEAP A$$ SON OF A B****. That doesn't mean I won't buy one, I will, and I'll like it. I think I'm tired of being a fanboy and want things to be fair. I also think that Blu-Ray might just win, mostly because of HD-DVD low manufacturing costs compared to consumer costs. Sony might have made gamers angry with blu-ray but I don't think anyone who bought a PS3 is complaining that it has the player built in. Right now those are the only opinions that matter, because the majority of consumers don't really give a crap yet. And by consumers, I mean me. At least until I get my new TV fixed.
ghoti 07-03-2007, 05:19 AM I think that calling the PS3 "worthless" might be a little harsh, but I have no problem saying that, from my perspective, it's certainly not worth what they're asking for it.
I neither need nor want a Blu-ray player, and there's no games even announced, let alone released, that have piqued my interest.
Lono_Lives 07-03-2007, 11:05 AM well, good news for all you ps3 gamers: Ninja Gaiden is out today!!! wait. this was already out for the xbox like two years ago? Oops. Well, ps3ers, have fun with your 4 yr old game. I'm gonna go play dirt, overlord, project slypheed, vampyre rain, and on and on and on and on and on and on and on....
hmmmm scrambled eggs while resting my feet....hmmmmm.

As usual you are correct. What I must point out is that there are some things wrong with all the consoles, the PS3 just seems to accel at having wrong points instead of good ones currently. I think the idea of having a removable HDD is a great idea that I really wish the 360 would have had. I hate having to go out and pay $180 for a 120 GB HDD where on the PS3 you could find a 500 GB on sale for that same price. I also must give in to the fact that PS3 @ Home looks pretty interesting. I doubt it will last, people think Microsoft is penny and dime-ing us to death, wait till you see Home. I think the PS3 may be a little ahead of its time and I am not sure if the devs are wanting to deal with that extra work to make the games where they could work on stuff that they are already accustomed to (the 360), hence why PS3 is losing almost all exclusives...
Now to the Wii. It has so many problems it is actually kinda sad. The over-hyped internet browser is slow and inefficient, but I suppose it is a start. The games are sometimes kinda lame, unless you enjoy jumping around and flicking your wrists all day. But at least those games are fun, and that is STILL what gaming is all about. Legend of Zelda :Twilight Princess is a damn fun game, especially considering how it is in kinda the "first gen" of games for the Wii. Most games on the Wii are more or less party games, that would be a blast when you have some friends over and are so bored that you laugh uncontrollably when someone sneezes just to have something to do...
I have been fortunate enough to not have many problems with my 360. The only ones I can recall is when it would freeze in Oblivion, but that was in a way, my fault. I don't think the 360 was ready to doup something like 5k gems.... I have had very few problems otherwise. Never overheated, never crashed or anything like that. That is why I support the 360 so much. While some people are unlucky and have had problems with it, I have not and I have played some damn good games. I am 15 and when you spend $435 of your own money((not including games)when I get $10/week + $10 when I mow...) I think that this system has given me enough fun time to pay that money back to me. That is why I support my 360 so much. I want a Wii but I haven't had the money to go out and get one. I enjoy bashing the PS3 right now because they have no way to defend it. All those PS3 fanboys are going crazy because they deny that their system DOES in fact suck right now. They try to come at me with a few red lights and some tech support calls, but I have bigger guns and far more ammunition.

Rowlander 07-05-2007, 04:54 AM The power of the PS3 to sell Blu-Ray discs should not be underestimated.
It is ture that there are by far more HD DVD standalone players being sold than Blu-Ray standalone players. But the relatively huge number of PS3s is still catapulting overall Blu-Ray movie-sales ahead of HD DVD. The movie-per-player attachment rate is a lot higher in the HD DVD camp but movie studios donīt care about that. As long as Blu-Ray sells more overall, HD DVD will stay in second place.
I think the ones who are really pissed about this are the companies making Blu-Ray standalone players. :)
I just hope HD DVD suvives. I already own 16 movies on that format.
ghoti 07-05-2007, 05:43 AM According to Sony, Blu-ray movie sales have jumped 1000% in Europe since the PS3 launched.

No no no. You have to remember, it's Europe.
They sold 1/2 of a movie, now they sold 499.
Perfect, logical, math. :D

Blu-ray players will drop substantially cheaper than the PS3 soon enough. They are a little behind the price drop curve when compared to standalone HD-DVD players but I feel the effect of the PS3 will far outweight standalone players of both formats combined for quite some time. And I firmly believe if people can spend $25-$30 to buy an HD movie outright that'll play on a machine they already own, they're much less likely to intentionally go out and spend money on a dedicated player for a competing format that has less movie studio support.
And sorry, but anyone willing to invest any significant amount of money on an unproven media format runs the risk of "wasting" that money if the industry doesn't follow their lead in adopting that format. If you get/got great deals on those movies, awesome for you... but buying 16 movies at $30ish is kinda silly at this point IMO.
