Argh.... the sound on that GamerCast Network segment.... argh. It keeps phasing in and out, my ears are bleeding!

Edit:// Another thing about the Blu-Ray vs digital download, I wanted to raise another point for you. You talked about permanent retention of digital content in an external drive, but I think you have missed the point of it. At $5 for a movie (for example) you're going to watch the movie and then delete it - we are after all the Tivo generation; you're not going to keep it. So the argument that you wouldn't have room for 50+ high def titles to store on any console is right, but it isn't the market they're aiming for.

The point has already been raised that a movie could be downloaded onto a memory card at a pod somewhere (say, the mall) and taken home to watch - this is the intended next move for rental places. And since there is already an extensive rental market (Netflix etc) doesn't it make sense that digital distribution would enforce this model? A model which removes the need for expensive optical media and which allows for royalties every time it's played...

Fralwz watches Hi-def porn on his ps3

I also noted that you mentioned that you could store all your hi-def movies on your 360, but you can't cause they're only rentals, blu-ray ftw.

Destyn, never underestimate the power of the packrat generation. Some folks want need to own their movies.

You can't just up and replace movie sales with movie rentals... I agree with Shane86, they're two different markets. Until everyone's agreed on a single standard for DRM so purchasing and viewing isn't tied to a specific piece of hardware/software, I think digital downloads for owning will be hindered. People simply won't adopt one piece of hardware/software to house their movie collection on a large scale... it needs to be more "open" than that. At least not in my opinion.

I would agree... they key point is money... not loyalty.

The 360 has a better attach rate then the PS3... so if they really want to double their money... going multi-platform is the way to go. But be prepared to have 3 disks. lol

What exactly are you "agreeing" with? I read Raven's post and then yours but didn't get what you were saying. Raven indicated it would probably not go to 360 and you seem to be indicating that money talks (meaning it might/could).

I think there's no way "Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots" will go to the 360. There may be some MGS game that ends up on the platform, but I'm betting the game we saw released yesterday will not be it.

Absolutely (http://www.engadget.com/2008/06/10/metal-gear-solid-4-plays-favorites-with-dig-at-xbox-360/)

When I first saw that I thought it was perhaps a nice nod back to the Psone game when you DID have to change discs in between Metal Gear and just a little way of saying "look how far we have come".

I also like the installing screen's health warnings whilst Snake is blatently smoking.

Nice show guys!

Basically Rothbart nailed it. I doubt they would put it on 360 but they may make a side game kind of like how they made VR Missions back on the ps1.

Chain smoking even! He sucks down three and a half cancer sticks during the install. I've never been a smoker, but is it even reasonable to down almost 4 cigarettes in under 9 minutes?

Thanks!

You were thinking about that red Kratos psp weren't you?

I basically am assuming this because if you look at Konami, a lot of their titles have been Sony ever since PS1 and it seems they have a lot of loyalty to Sony. Besides the Castlevania games on GBA and DS and MGS 2: Substance that was on an xbox (can't remember if it was 360 or not) I can't recall any other standout Konami game on anything else but a Playstation system ( this is after ps1 was released and of course I'm probably wrong. Feel free to correct me.)

Metal Gear Solid 1 and 2 are both available on the PC although most people (including myself until recently) dont realise that.

I disagree, the market is being made right now. As we did with the format wars, we'll settle for whatever limited options we're given, and in the end when it comes to most movies we'll settle for rentals.

I grant you some sectors of the market will want to own, if only to be awkward and have an argument against renting; but if you look at the increase in Netflix subscriptions, downloads from the Xbox marketplace/iTunes and perhaps even the number of times you (the user) pull out a movie from your collection to watch it again, you'll see where this is heading.

I'm not saying optical media will disappear, at least not for a while yet. But I am saying downloadable media will not be a permanent option unless a) storage devices increase exponentially (and don't hit a hardware limit) and b) compression factors improve.

rothbart
06-13-2008, 05:29 PM
Blu-ray will reach a much wider audience than 360 owners though... and as long as you've got competing systems and no real "buy to own" setups (or none that give you any sense of security after your current hardware or hardware generation dies) I can't see digital downloads replacing all the DVDs and Blu-ray movies people are buying today.

As Blu-ray prices lower, as player prices lower, adoption of Blu-ray will increase. I mean if you were right, I would expect to see digital distribution skyrocketing now and even DVD sales plummeting. Afterall, renting a movie from Xbox Live Video Marketplace is cheaper than buying it even on DVD...

There are renters and there are packrats... there is NO digital download alternative to DVD/Blu-ray for packrats now... and there is no 1080p (or even un-heavily compressed) digital download rental service for the videophiles out there...

In most ways, digital delivery right now... today... has compromises to be made. I can get in my car and drive to Target, buy a blu-ray, come home and play it faster than I can download a movie. Now Granted, I live two blocks from a Target... but if I want to buy a movie, I don't want it married to a single piece of hardware like it would be on the 360.

good podcast anyways. MGS 4 is the best game ever! already finished, haven't found the assassins creed outfit yet. ARGH lol. Also, MGS going to xbox live is like spitting on Sony, and seen as though there are so many PS tie ins and 360 pisstakes in MGS4, i doubt it will go there.

Yeah after the act 1 install I thought I was done but nooooo every act install.

*at least better then inserting disk after another*

Konami announced the official install times after the embargo stink over it.

8 Minutes = first install, when you start the game.

Then before each act, the time it takes to install is as follows

Act 2 - 3 mins
Act 3 - 3 mins
Act 4 - 2 mins
Act 5 - 1 min

Adding all that install time up, it's about 17 minutes combined. Most reports I've read have the game taking 21-25 hours to complete (based on your play style.)

Not complaining, just calling Rothbart out for saying on the podcast that he didn't think it would be a big deal if it was installing in the background, but wouldn't like it if you were just installing the game and sitting there... Just wanted a comment, I don't think I complained, whined or even gave an opinion on the install time... :undecided:

I haven't gotten past Act I yet (not enough time in the day) so I haven't seen any installs past the initial one yet... So far, I'd be willing to sit and watch paint dry for an hour for more of this game... maybe two hours.

BTW, the episode was recorded BEFORE the game came out and we knew exactly how it was going to happen... but you know that.

I'm going to pick up MGS4 this week. Believe it or not, it will be my first PS3 video game purchase. My Need for Speed Carbon came with the PS3 I purchased from Toy's R Us. Local promotion. After 7 months of owning it & playing nothing but Blu Rays on it, it will finally get some playtime. Then it'll be back to Blu Ray playback until FF XIII hits =P. Still deciding on Little Big Planet.

found out how to get the Altair costume, it isnt too hard, its just the alert part thats hard

YOu have to kill 50 people
attack and hold 50 using CQC
Get the alert phase less than 24 times. I think this might be during the whole game

I'm fine with the loading... even adding in the install time, it's not what I would call excessive. Would I rather there had been no loading at all? It never really got to the point where I was bummed by it honestly... I'm about 6 hours in, I suppose it could get better/worse before the game's over though.
