View Full Version : The Official RRoD Thread - Taking Fail to a whole new level...
Joshthegreat 07-18-2007, 09:47 AM SWL EDIT: Yes, this is the Official RRoD Thread. Post all RRoD Material in here.
I thought I'd start a poll asking you guys how many times your 360 or 360s (as the case may be) have failed.
I'm on my 3rd 360 in 10 months. What about you guys?
Tiannam 07-18-2007, 03:38 PM 8 months, no failures.
It doesn't matter anymore because they'll fix it for free or repay anyone who had to pay for repairs in the past. It also now has a 3 year warranty, for free.
Altered_Weapon 07-18-2007, 03:51 PM 8 months, no failures.

You say that like it's a good thing. It does still matter. The fact that they extended the warranty is an admission of shoddy hardware and planning on their part. I love my 360, but saying that MS is awesome for extending the warranty is just plain stupid. The one I have now makes a funny noise every once in a while but it hasn't failed yet. I'm not going to turn it in and wait for weeks to get it back, I'll just live with it.
I had mine for about 10 months before it died. I was PISSED! I still am. I think the original Xbox was a quality product and to get the next gen product that failed inside of the first year is unimaginable and just plain shoddy business. F*** Microsoft for that!
I do love playing my 360 though.
SatanBanana 07-18-2007, 04:34 PM 8 months, no failures.

Mine went 1.5 years, and I just bought shadowrun, so basically, I am screwed. Oh, and mine broke once.
CaptainDDL 07-18-2007, 04:40 PM Once. I was without my 360 for 3 weeks, which took about half of my Halo 3 beta playing time. :/
Tiannam 07-18-2007, 05:08 PM Once. I was without my 360 for 3 weeks, which took about half of my Halo 3 beta playing time. :/
Haha, I remember while I was downloading the beta "what if I got the 3 rod?" Luckly I didn't buy one of the first xbox's.But, I keep my Xbox in my basement where it's cold, also I have it in the middle of a coffee table so there is nothing by it's fans, keeping it nice and cool.
Locke 07-18-2007, 06:45 PM Coming up on a year in September, no problems with it so far...
CrAzE 07-18-2007, 08:15 PM No problems with mines and not expecting any either.
SatanBanana 07-18-2007, 09:26 PM Once. I was without my 360 for 3 weeks, which took about half of my Halo 3 beta playing time. :/
It has been 4 weeks, and i miss Guitar hero.
Spudnik 07-18-2007, 09:27 PM Mine had a failure but it was that it would keep freezing. Ididn't just magically show the 3 rod. It may have once over the day it broke and I tried fixing it but mostly it just froze like a minute after turning on. Anyone else experienced this?
ghoti 07-19-2007, 07:33 AM Mine hasn't died yet, but it's had a couple of out-of-body experiences...
chim7 07-19-2007, 04:19 PM Between Xbox 360's failing and PS3's no games and I just don't like nintendo games I'm waiting on what to get. I had a PS2, one of the slim kind, for just long enough until it got out of warranty and bam stopped working for no reason and noone could help me. I'm still angry at sony for that and it is one reason I'm so skeptacle about the PS3. At least Microsoft seems helpful.

You should hear Rothbart's story about MS being "helpful".
chim7 07-19-2007, 05:15 PM that bad, huh.
jeff1010322 07-19-2007, 08:24 PM My xbox 360 has not failed yet and i have had it for 10 months. None of my friends at school has had theres broken either.
CaptainDDL 07-19-2007, 10:35 PM Mine had a failure but it was that it would keep freezing. Ididn't just magically show the 3 rod. It may have once over the day it broke and I tried fixing it but mostly it just froze like a minute after turning on. Anyone else experienced this?
Yeah. Mine froze up a lot, before finally giving me the 3RROD.
Spudnik 07-20-2007, 03:11 AM Yeah. Mine froze up a lot, before finally giving me the 3RROD.[/quote]
Yeah thats what mine did but it showed the Rod once and then went back to freezing.
EvilFiek 07-20-2007, 09:01 AM Got mine in December and it's still alive. But my Controller broke (right analogue was worn out) and I had to get it replaced. And the wired controller I bought when the 360 launched is also starting to fail (somewhat hard to press the B button). So while I am satisfied with the quality of my 360, the controller quality is pissing me off.
Flint50 07-21-2007, 01:30 AM 8 months so far and no hardware failures. I hear a lot of stories about it, and I read an article about how people were opening up their consoles and finding a new heatsink there. Most of the problems do seem like heating issues.
My advice? Well, I don't ay mine for long periods of time cause i love my PC 3D shooters, but I'd recommend letting it cool down every once in a while (don't play 6 hours straight). Also, I bought one of those extra fans for teh back which sucks air out faster. Was like $10. Good deal IMO to keep it cooler.
Maybe that will help some people. Hopefully the future XBox's will have that extra heatsink on it. That should drop the failure rate in teh system.
Scrubble 07-24-2007, 02:54 AM Seven months with no issues.
Frawlz 07-28-2007, 07:00 PM Yup... only once.
But does anyone know if they switch it with a referbished one?
CaptainDDL 07-29-2007, 12:22 AM In the little letter they send back with your 360, they tell you whether it is or not.
I have mine since tha EU launch and had never any problems with it. Same goes for 2 friends of mine.
A Dark Knight 2 07-29-2007, 11:47 AM My just presented my the glorious red rings of death last week. Had if for about 7 months. Bitter thoughts about the 360 now, but hey-I do love playing it! I also have a Wii and will pick up a PS3 in a few weeks!:)
VinDali 07-30-2007, 11:41 AM My 1st 360 lived from March 2006 to June 2007. It did not die from the RRoD, but I kept getting the white multi-language page that tells you to load the disc into a 360 (derrrr you are a 360).
After about a month of calling Microsoft's Customer Swerv-Us and getting BS answers from them, since they are apparently provided with No Information what so ever once the consoles are at the repair center, I called the BBB and filed a complaint. 3 days later someone from M$ called and said that it will be shipped back finally.
I received the new console last Monday.
VinDali 08-01-2007, 06:00 PM My buddie's 3rd 360 just got the RRoD last week and today his 4th (yep, he has 2 - 1 upstairs and 1 down stairs) got the RRoD. It died right after he dropped off the 3rd at the UPS Store. The woman there said it was the 8th 360 brought in for shipment today.
Macca 08-02-2007, 05:11 AM Had mine since Aussie launch (March 06) and had no problems with it. Paid for the EB extended warranty at the time though which seems like a bit of a waste of money now that it's been extended anyway!!
Have 3 friends that have had to send theirs back after the RRoD though...:(
TheTastyLettuce 08-02-2007, 07:47 AM Seven months, no problems

I just stumbled across a Wii parody video and got linked to the site. Decided to sign up for the forums. Don't worry I'll rarely be posting
Lono_Lives 08-12-2007, 03:11 AM Welcome Lettuce!
V3NOM 08-18-2007, 10:03 PM None at all for me, my 360 will be a year old come Christmas.
The way I see it, though, is that if it breaks down I'll be covered by the warranty, which will then replace my current console with one that isn't potentially faulty.
rothbart 08-19-2007, 04:52 AM If Microsoft had nuts, I'd kick them square in them tonight...
My 360 is dead... Red Ring of DownrightTerribleConstructionQuality
CaptainDDL 08-19-2007, 03:56 PM Second time, right?
rothbart 08-19-2007, 07:06 PM Second time, right?
Nope, first for me. I had an entirely different horrible Xbox 360 experience when I first got it... ~3 weeks of not being able to access my gamertag on my box with virtually no help from Microsoft.
I'm expecting another few weeks of inability to use my 360 as it was intended out of this...

rothbart 08-30-2007, 03:19 PM The problem with these polls is that you can't update them... I'm reflected as "Never" but now it should say "Once".
keith22 09-04-2007, 09:06 PM once and i was frkin pissed:mad:
Sprite Gremlin 09-05-2007, 03:25 PM My 360 died today after 1 and a half years of good use ...this is the first time its happened and i hope it gets fixed and sent back in time for halo 3
Shane86 09-05-2007, 09:26 PM Hehe I wonder how many will break September 24th? :D
DeereFTW 09-07-2007, 11:48 PM It happened once to me but it was just a dirty disc error
TheSmokingManX 09-08-2007, 08:36 AM Never. I have a launch console that's yet to crap out on me. Big knock on wood.
ShooterFan 09-09-2007, 08:08 AM WTF!! I just wrote a sweet, long a$$ reply on this topic, but somehow I got signed out and I lost it.
In short:
I'm on my 4th, and it likes to halt to a grinding screech when its trying to read the discs that it (lately) seems to believe, are "dirty and cannot be read"
I guess i'll go grab my "soft cloth" and continue cleaning them until Sept. 24th at 11:59 p.m. when I'll probably get the ring of death.
Kudos 09-10-2007, 07:12 AM Bought it on launch in Australia. Still working without a hitch.
Now if only i could get it connected to live with my new connection >.>
CrAzE 09-12-2007, 09:51 PM I just got the Ring of Death...=[
I also voided the warranty (Some stupid reason, please don't ask it just makes me sadder and mad). Well, I guess I'll be on the forums more often!
Frawlz 09-12-2007, 10:20 PM ok... I know you said not to ask...
But I have to... So, what did you do?
Hey, everyone is thinking it!
CrAzE 09-12-2007, 10:22 PM I though I could fix it myself some way ='[ >=|
I didn't want to wait for forever just to get another console that would probably break in 15mins again.
Frawlz 09-12-2007, 10:24 PM Oh.. ummm.... ok.
How did you plan on fixing it?
CrAzE 09-12-2007, 10:26 PM I don't know that was the stupid part...
Shane86 09-12-2007, 10:30 PM haha what an idiot, have you tried the towel trick yet? :D
CrAzE 09-12-2007, 10:33 PM Yo stfu I'm not an idiot....Do you eve know who I am? To be calling me an idiot...
V3NOM 09-12-2007, 11:04 PM Did you take your 360 apart or something? If you really wanted a quick fix you should have just tried the towel trick like Shane86 said.
I would have just sent it in and not bothered trying to fix it. If the service is speedy you might get it back in time for the launch of Halo 3.
I just have to wonder: am I one of the only 360 owners that hasn't gotten a red ring? My console is only about 9 months old, though so I'm sure its time will come.
CrAzE 09-12-2007, 11:12 PM Never the towel trick only makes it worst.
I was thinking of putting another thermal paste on to the Gpu.
I just have to wonder: am I one of the only 360 owners that hasn't gotten a red ring? My console is only about 9 months old, though so I'm sure its time will come.
nah, got mine since the EU launch and had no problems with it either. same goeas for friends of mine. In fact I don't know a RL person who had a broken 360. If you're reading all those complains on the net you could begin to think that all 360 are faulty in some way.
maybe all those without problems should start to whine all over the net in the same way. ;)
Hotcooler 09-13-2007, 10:02 AM Try searching sonething like that (http://www.google.com/translate?u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.xboxland.net%2Fx360%2 Findex.php%3Fdo%3Dproduct%26id%3D14&langpair=ru%7Cen&hl=en&ie=UTF8) near your place :D
CaptainDDL 09-13-2007, 01:07 PM Why would you be so stupid as to void your 3-year RROD warranty if you didn't know what you were doing?
shadowtech 09-13-2007, 01:57 PM I would say sell it on ebay as a broken 360 and put whatever you can get towards a new one.
ooSiRLUDiDoo 09-25-2007, 07:17 PM LOL, I have just noticed from being on different forums all day that you know its bad when people who have the RRoD, make brand new threads and no where in these threads does any one say in some way shape or form, "this thread has been done already". Now you know it's really bad when the moderators do not delete or merge
all of these topics togeather. That and most of them just saty unlocked for ever and a day. Its a sign that M$ is *** up on secondly basis that redone topics over and over and over are becoming so normal that the members and/or moderators have become desensitized to this. For get statistics of what 30% of gammers are returning 360s, just look around the gamming forums of the internet, theres the proof you need. I love my 360 and do not own anything else cept for an original xbox but just look around the forums, it is a real true BIG problem and nothing is being done! All M$ can do is release a letter saying essentially, "We will let you return your 360s for 3 more years and give you back 360s that will eventually fail just so you can turn them back in and ship them back to us". thanks Micro$oft, I can feel the love!
Legendtaker117 09-25-2007, 07:32 PM well, microsoft is loosing a ton of money with this happening and there puting the new chip or cooler or whatever they do, into the shipped 360's when they send them back. So when people get there second 360. It shouldnt break anymore. And just in case it does. Microsoft still has the 3 year warranty.
ooSiRLUDiDoo 09-25-2007, 07:43 PM I must not have gotten that chip all 5 times lol
Legendtaker117 09-25-2007, 09:15 PM Well, they only reasently done it, within the last couple months.
Im currently on my second 360, its been 10 months since my other one broke down (first live span about 5 months) and my 360 was on for about almost all day saturday, and when I went to feel how hot it was, it was actually kinda cold.
keith22 09-26-2007, 06:21 AM Yeah microsoft swrews with lot of people. The old 360 fail rate is high and the hole replacment scheme is scammy i had to wait 45 minutes on the line to get a stupid idtio who told me my consloe whont arrive for another 2 weeks thank good i just bought the elite
SupaSlick 10-02-2007, 12:52 PM Hey Guys - I'm trying to get an idea of how much more hell I have to go through - so if you'd like to share any recent RRoD experiences, do so here!
Here's mine so far:

TheUnderling133 10-02-2007, 04:33 PM It took 8 days of no info from the plant to get mine back the first time.
Canuck 10-02-2007, 07:34 PM 1/2/07 Purchased 360
9/25/07 Purchased Halo 3
10/01/07 No RRoD yet!

10/03/2007 A broken 360 has left McAllen Tx and is heading toward the 'A'. To my home! 4-360s and counting.
So all in all is't been a rough end to this years summer, gaming wise. I actually hadn't played a good day/night of gaming since the end of July
V3NOM 10-03-2007, 06:52 AM Bought mine on December 26, 2006. No RROD or any problems with it at all yet. I hope that I never get it; that process sounds like a nightmare.
SupaSlick 10-03-2007, 11:00 AM Bought mine on December 26, 2006. No RROD or any problems with it at all yet. I hope that I never get it; that process sounds like a nightmare.
Yeah - that's what I used to think, I bought mine Nov 2006, and it worked perfectly until the RRoD - no warning whatsoever.
SUCKS!!!!!
Canuck 10-03-2007, 07:14 PM Well hopefully my two month delay for my 360 purchase will mean no RRoD for me, though you can never be sure...
Tiannam 10-03-2007, 07:18 PM Dec. 25th 06- Turn on my 360.
October 3rd 07- No RRoD.
Mitch808 10-03-2007, 08:50 PM Dec. 25th 07 - Get my 360
Sept. 1st 07 - Go to my 360 and yell at my friend saying he broke it as a joke like i always do to scare him. I actually turn it on and BAM RRoD. The next thing he heard after my "OMG YOU BROKE IT...JK" was "WTF!?! YOU ACTUALLY BROKE IT!!!".
I guess i deserved it for always scaring him, but that time. I called him over and he saw i was pissed and then he saw the red ring and he just went red. He was going to buy me a new 360. :p he thought he actually broke it, because i really was angry and it had the red ring.
Called 5 times during the week and got hung up on 4 times, after i told them my name :s. Finally the 5ht time i got them to send me the box.
Sept. 8th 07 - Get my box, played some online co-op packing with supaslick.
Yesterday. October 2nd. 07 - Get my 360 in the mail, then pick up my copy of Halo 3.
By the way, i got 2 scratched Halo 3 discs and had to return the game twice in that day. Then i finally hooked up my 360, put in Halo 3. The sound skips sometimes. I don't know if it is my disc or my new 360, i havn't tried any other game yet so i'm not sure. (my 360 makes a weird sound, so i'm hoping it's not that. Even thought it probably is.
Garwalker 10-05-2007, 02:25 PM This is my 3rd RROD. Both previous times I was without for about three weeks each. This was before the 3 year warranty announcement.
9/21/07 - RROD
9/27/07 - Coffin in Mail. Before I pack it up I tried the towel trick and it works. Must finish the fight before anything else goes wrong.
10/01 - RROD in the morning and towel does not work. Took the coffin directly to the UPS airport dropoff.
10/03 - Coffin received by Microsoft
JAcK0R 10-09-2007, 10:46 AM I notice a disturbing lack of discussion of the new Falcon-chipped X360, therefore I'll start.
Since I'm broke, I can't really comment on it, but I like the idea that MS is finally going in and trying to resolve this issue with something other than customer service.
For those who own one, have you noticed anything different about them from the previous version? I'm assuming they run cooler, have fewer death rates, and run quieter.

I know there is a way you can tell if you have one, but i don't know what it is. I am getting my 360 back this week (hopefully) - how to you tell if it is a falcon - or that it at least has the new heat-sinc?
Legendtaker117 10-09-2007, 10:58 AM hopefully the Falcon Chip will fix all the RROD problems, cause its getting old and annoying. Luckily mines only broke down once, and Ive had my second for almost a year now *nocks on wood* :D
viatrophy 10-09-2007, 11:00 AM The new falcon isnt coming out till next year apparently.
And 360's which have been sent into repair wont have the chipsets fitted, you'd have to go buy a brand new 360 to get the product.
Legendtaker117 10-09-2007, 11:03 AM no the Falcon Chip is being put into models now, and there already out in the Halo 3 versions(source was from Attack of the Show on G4), and some(not many) are allready getting the RROD, but that might just be from the person playing days straight with Halo 3.....hopefully *Cues Twighlight Zone Music*
viatrophy 10-09-2007, 11:28 AM Ahhh okay, i take that back then. sorry. :)
Mr Eibmoz 10-09-2007, 11:51 AM no the Falcon Chip is being put into models now, and there already out in the Halo 3 versions(source was from Attack of the Show on G4), and some(not many) are allready getting the RROD, but that might just be from the person playing days straight with Halo 3.....hopefully *Cues Twighlight Zone Music*
Its not confirmed that the RRoDs were Falcons though. The Halo 360 had both falcon and non falcon versions.
I think I'm going to buy another 360 next year for HDMI and more reliability and the old one can be left set up in the other room for syslink fun without the anoyance of other folk carting their stuff round. Win.
Emophia 10-09-2007, 01:29 PM I sure hope the Falcon solves the RROD problem, because that's the only way I'd buy a 360...
And I want one...
rothbart 10-09-2007, 02:10 PM I notice a disturbing lack of discussion of the new Falcon-chipped X360, therefore I'll start.
It's mainly because there's not much to talk about... yet.
I like the idea that MS is finally going in and trying to resolve this issue with something other than customer service.
Don't get me started. But I'd like to point out that the goal of the Falcon (or 65nm chips) was never to fixed problems, it's just a milestone on the natural path to cost reduction. But since the motherboards need to be retooled for the smaller chips, it presents the perfect opportunity to also resolve the issues with the X-clamp (I think that's what it was called) that is reportedly prone to stress the motherboard, eventually causing issues over time with heat. The original chips were never faulty (to my knowledge), it was the design of the motherboard's clamp/cooling that cause the problem. Then again, Microsoft's never fessed up that it was a single problem they were facing.
For those who own one, have you noticed anything different about them from the previous version? I'm assuming they run cooler, have fewer death rates, and run quieter.
This is all circumstantial to the fact that smaller chips require less power, which presumably means less drastic cooling, which presumably means less noise. Also, a new design on the motherboard presumably means fewer problems, but everyone's missing the fact that ANY new hardware design is prone to problems... sometimes problems that don't surface right away. These Falcon machines may fail at ~1yr too for compeltely different reasons. I'm just suggesting we don't treat this new model as the "OMG I've gotta rush out and buy one now before they're perfect!!!!1!" model. Because frankly, we won't know right away.
And the thing that makes me the most nervous about this is that Microsoft let this happen to such a wide degree the first time and has completely BOTCHED the handling of it... let's just say my faith is almost dried up at this point. I need to be proven wrong. Going only on faith won't cut it for me.
The new falcon isnt coming out till next year apparently.
And 360's which have been sent into repair wont have the chipsets fitted, you'd have to go buy a brand new 360 to get the product.
I've heard some of the Halo 3 360s had it, but it was (IMO) fairly circumstantial evidence saying that... also, I think it's almost certain that you're right about the repairs. Don't expect anything but the model type you send in to be returned to you.
hopefully the Falcon Chip will fix all the RROD problems, cause its getting old and annoying. Luckily mines only broke down once, and Ive had my second for almost a year now *nocks on wood* :D
Tell me (and thousands of others) about it.
Its not confirmed that the RRoDs were Falcons though. The Halo 360 had both falcon and non falcon versions.
I've heard this and wondered the same thing too. In my mind, peeking through the vents at the size of the heatsink is not the same as popping the headsink off and comparing two differently sized CPUs. I remain doubtful until I see someone has disassembled one and posted pictures.
I think I'm going to buy another 360 next year for HDMI and more reliability and the old one can be left set up in the other room for syslink fun without the anoyance of other folk carting their stuff round. Win.
My son will eventually want one, but I'm not buying a 2nd one until I'm absolutely certain the widespread problems are history. Individual units fail... what Microsoft's got going on now is a full blown Charlie Foxtrot.
I sure hope the Falcon solves the RROD problem, because that's the only way I'd buy a 360...
And I want one...
I have a feeling you're nowhere near alone in your thought process. People in the know that aren't early adopters are quite likely sitting on the fence over their problems. It's such a shame with the potential they have to be hamstringed by something like build quality.
Judau 10-13-2007, 06:24 PM I was wondering if there are any signs of your 360 dying before it hits the can... just yesterday my 360 froze when playing a game I tried different games and still it froze. When restarting again it froze at the xbox 360 screen title... but it works fine right now after a few more tries so any clues if my 360 is going to die on me??
Hotcooler 10-13-2007, 06:56 PM IMO yes if you not improve cooling some way (How old is your console). It's freases cause of overheating. I get same result yesterday - when I forget to turn on watercooling :D
P.S. When it overheats it's pretty noisy..
Judau 10-13-2007, 07:05 PM well I only played about an hour and my console is right next the my window so I don't think it could have over heated that quickly though.....
Hotcooler 10-13-2007, 07:21 PM Dunno - Without cooling - mine overheated in about 10minutes in dashboard :D
So How old is your console?
Peacemaker 10-14-2007, 07:21 AM The Xbox 360 hardware is a piece of crap. If I was you I'd start ordering the box to mail it in so it will be fixed before Mass effect comes out.
viatrophy 10-14-2007, 08:02 AM Im sure its just people dont look after there 360's.
I had a launch premium and nothing went wrong with it,
then i upgraded to a elite from launch and nothing went wrong with that.
And before you say it was just me,
my brother-in-law got one thee same time as me and nothing went wrong,
Plus many of my friends have.
MadMikeMan 10-14-2007, 10:46 AM yah, my I take care of my baby, I got her elevated, ventalated, she has her own spot in my room, and I don't push her too hard in long gaming sessions, and I've had her for over a year now.

I think it is perhaps a problem in North America as, although i agree bad treatment may contribute, im sure THAT many consoles weren't neglected, and no more so than their other consoles.
However, I am not aware of any cases at all in the UK or atleast not nearly on the same scale. Me and my bro both have launch consoles that are perfect and played daily, as do many of my friends so i dont think it is as big an issue over here.
Legendtaker117 10-14-2007, 05:28 PM Im on my second 360, and I take care of it. Especially since I know about RROD, I dont let anybody touch it. and It still broke down on me.
Tiannam 10-14-2007, 07:16 PM Just don't leave it on for many hours and make sure it's well ventilated. You'll be fine.
SupaSlick 10-14-2007, 09:48 PM Just don't leave it on for many hours and make sure it's well ventilated. You'll be fine.
unfortunately that's not good enough. It's a hardware defect and no amount of ventilation will prevent it from EVENTUALLY getting RRoD. Believe me, I know.
Mine never even got hot, and it still got the lights. Now more than a month later, I'm just glad to have it back.

I think it's a big issue over here in the UK as well bud. I'm in Scotland, and I've had the red ring of death on two occasions, (the second time was just eleven days after getting the machine back from repairs at Microsoft after the first red ring death), and I know a good few other people that have had the same problem with 'Gen 1' 360's.
My machine was well ventilated on both occasions it died, and the only signs I had before the machine met it's maker was in both occasions I was playing RS6:Vegas, and the machine froze up a couple of times during games before finally showing the ring of death.
KeavyRain 10-15-2007, 03:47 PM Updates are the biggest threat to the 360.
My first one died to an update. My second has started slowing down while playing Dead Rising so it may be on its way out.

I would say the safest way to prevent your 360 from RRoDing is to:
Not use it.
Simple as that.
KeavyRain 10-16-2007, 12:11 AM updates have nothing to do with the 360's RROD
Care to explain how so many have gotten the RROD (Including my first one) after they rebooted following installing an update?
Its not just refurbs, mods, and chipped 360's either.
I think he works for Microsoft!
Legendtaker117 10-16-2007, 12:41 AM It happens so much that everybody says its something, Ive heard its the updates. Ive hears its from playing to long. Ive heard its from Halo 3, Ive heard its from EDF2017. Ive heard that hurling your controller at it will get it turn RROD. Updates have nothing to do with it, its just with so many RROD theres some people in every demographic.
I wasnt actually there when my 360 got RROD for the first time. I went to my dads for Christmas break and I was living with my Cousin at the time and when I came back he said my 360 had the RROD. He never played online for 2 reasons, because his mom would kill him if he was caught playing online. AND I would kill him if I cought him playing online on my Gamertag without permission. So the cause of the RROD is not from updates as mine was not.

Chexd, it has not happened to me, but i know of a few people who have had RROD, hey one even had it a WEEK, yes one week after buying the console. There is a serious fundamental flaw with these consoles. I thing i have noticed, is that all my mates who had RROD, had there consoles standing up, and were situated on a carpet, could this be a cause? I leave mine flat, in a room with wooden flooring, and in a unit.

OK I apologize. See, I thought you were saying that the updates never cause the RROD and you thought I was saying that updates are the only way to get the RROD.
Confuzzled am I.
Anyways, yes you can RROD from many issues. Some are known, others unknown.

whoever puts there 360 on a carpet is just plain stupid, yes that heats it up faster. Also it can start of fire. Thats why I dont put my 360 near any type of clothe. Also I would strongly advise everybody to not put there 360's in a vertical position because if you even touch it and it wobbles a teenyweeny itsy bitsy bit, it will put a scratch ring around your disc.

Call Microsoft and start the "process" asap. Get ready for about a 4-week turn around. Sorry to hear it. I know how much it sucks.

Frankly, I see it the opposite way. I say game away as long as you can, let it happen, get it fixed, get it over with.
Why worry about the inevitable, game on!

rothbart 10-26-2007, 12:55 AM Xbox support went well. Now I wait for the coffin.
You're looking at three weeks minimum to getting your 360 back. I've gone through the process twice in the last two months.... *sigh* BTW, if there are any problems, that time estimate is null and void.
Did you ask for a loaner 360?
Shyeah... let me know how that goes.
Spudnik 10-26-2007, 12:59 AM No seriously Rothbart one of the guys at gamertag radio said that he asks a rep for one and they sent him one. Apparetnly they don't advertise it but if you ask they will oblige.

Europeans are as vulnerable to it as Americans are. The only difference is that we have different power systems, but the 360's power supply isn't what causes the red ring, nor is it even one of the causes (there are many problems that could be considered "General Hardware Failure."
You guys must fear the 360 not just the rrod as the 360 can die in so many dif ways(ive had 2 fail on me with no rrods in sight)

Urban Legend. When mine died the weekend before Halo 3 came out, I asked for the loaner and they never heard of it. I even asked to talk to the supervisor and he said there was no such thing. It took exactly three weeks for me to get it back. It ended up being a new system (refurb probably) and not the same one repaired.
Just to note, I tried the Towel trick and it did work for about five days before it RR on me again so I just sent it in.

This is absolutely false. A "regular person" cannot get a "loaner". A high profile blogger/podcaster might be able to get one. I've asked multiple times, as have others. They will claim (honestly or dishonestly) that they have never heard of a loaner program and that there is nothing they can do.
Rapahatsutt 10-26-2007, 12:04 PM mine got really hot before it got the rings, but the guy i bought it off [second-hand like] repaired it for me and i havent had any problem since, it doesnt even get hot now even after playing on it for hours in one sitting

Sounds like he ditched the X clamps and used Arctic Silver on the heatsinks.

but in short - annoyed.
Garwalker 11-04-2007, 05:57 PM Which time?

The second time I thought crap. Didn't they fix that already?

It's not so much that it's hard to get a replacement as the fact that you have to deal with Xbox customer support (which is worse than normal MS support) and you have to wait at least 3 weeks on average to get your console back.
One thing I've always wondered -- do they give you your hard drive back when they ship a replacement?
Garwalker 11-05-2007, 10:42 PM One thing I've always wondered -- do they give you your hard drive back when they ship a replacement?
Before you ship it you take off your hard drive. You send in the console bare bones including n0 power supply.
TrevPunk 11-06-2007, 10:04 AM I got the Red Ring of Death last week on Monday and I got my coffin on Friday. I'm just waiting for my new 360, but I got to wait with copies of COD 4, The Orange Box, and Guitar Hero III waiting on my shelf.

KeavyRain 11-14-2007, 12:42 AM Mine RROD'd after the spring update was installed but here's the weird thing: The night before, in Final Fantasy XI, I barely squeaked out a win in my Genkai 5 fight so I wonder if Maat had something to do with it. viatrophy 11-29-2007, 02:43 PM 10 minutes?! Is the store across the street from you? :D I'm debating on getting the service plan from MS for year two since year one was as moody as a Batman comic. Horrible joke, I know.
actually it was mid day. no traffic. :p
maybe not 10 minutes then smart-arse haha
probably about 20 minutes then.
Hobo Hunter1001 11-29-2007, 05:05 PM 5 Minutes. I went to gamestop, bought a new 360, opened the box, replaced my 360 with the new one (while keeping my hard drive and returning the new one), and returned it to the store.

So you're saying the employee that helped you violated store policy by not confirming the serial number on the receipt and on the returned console were not the same?
I find that incredibly hard to believe.
Mitch808 11-29-2007, 06:36 PM This must have been a record. I sent out my 360 for repair on Monday, got a refurb on Wednesday. Hope the system lasts. :)
SAME THING JUST HAPPENED TO ME! After i made my Annoyed thread. I am very pleased considering it took a month last time it broke.

Gamestop employee stupidity FTW!!!!

Wal-Mart, I'd believe but GameStop...
I mean, unless the guy wanted to be fired.
Hobo Hunter1001 11-29-2007, 09:14 PM He was probably a new employee.
Lord Butters I 11-30-2007, 11:36 PM I've got you all beat. My repair turnaround was a half an hour. I fixed it myself by taking a heat gun to the motherboard. Okay it's considerably more complex than that but I essentially did what the Towel Trick does, only my method is permanant.
Ryobin 12-01-2007, 03:06 AM cool
but warrenty is void if anything happens that you cant fix
KeavyRain 12-01-2007, 03:09 AM I called MS today for a status update. My 360 arrived at the repair center Tuesday and today they just got to it.
Should be back to me no later than Dec. 14th.

Hopefully you'll get it back before Christmas then. :)
Duffman X18 12-01-2007, 03:09 PM I've went the normal "coffin" way, took about a month or two......thank god for my original XBox, P.C., and PS2.

Since Dec. 14th is 11 days before Christmas I think it will.
In fact, it must because I'm getting CoD4 and a year of XBL for Christmas and I seriously wanna play online with you guys.
If my 360 bricks after installing the update I'll drive to the repair center and demand a replacement.
Lord Butters I 12-01-2007, 09:26 PM Since Dec. 14th is 11 days before Christmas I think it will.
USPS has been known to have considerable delays.
KeavyRain 12-02-2007, 01:27 AM USPS has been known to have considerable delays.
FedEx is shipping it.
I wouldn't trust USPS to deliver on-time if my life depended on it. Government agencies have no motivation to perform. Look at the DMV!
ShooterFan 12-02-2007, 06:45 AM I sent my 4th 360 back on a Friday, and I recieved the replacement on the following Thursday. This was during the time that people were complaining how long it takes to get them back. Needless to say, I was greatly impressed considering I live in Nova Scotia.
Mine was 2 hours( it was only really one hour but had to wait for my lift to take me to the distributors)... South African return policies FTW!
Tiannam 12-18-2007, 09:30 AM Hahah, i got the Ring of fire.... pretty sweet, especially right before Christmas. No CoD4 or GHIII for me this year :)
So, I've decided to come back to the SG community, for those of you that remember me.

Bacontastic 12-18-2007, 10:54 AM I think I am the only one to never have gotten it. *knocks on wood* I have had my for about a year now.
You're not. Mine has been going for about 1 1/2 years, and no rings o' death.
SupaSlick 12-18-2007, 11:44 AM Well, at least it didn't happen to you the week before Halo 3 came out, like it did for me. By the time I got mine back, no one wanted to play Co-Op anymore. :(
AblativMeatshld 12-18-2007, 11:58 AM Well, at least it didn't happen to you the week before Halo 3 came out, like it did for me. By the time I got mine back, no one wanted to play Co-Op anymore. :(
To be fair, no one wanted to play co-op with you anyways... :)

Don't cry Supa... It'll be ok buddy... :D
SupaSlick 12-18-2007, 12:58 PM Lol - in all seriousness, I actually still want to do some legendary co-op for a few levels. So if anyone still even plays Halo 3 campaign, let me know.

I might be up for it this evening... what times you looking at?
SupaSlick 12-18-2007, 01:07 PM oh not sure about tonight, but my vacation starts friday, so I'm sure I'll be on alot after that.
AblativMeatshld 12-18-2007, 01:08 PM I leave town till the 26th this saturday (likely zero internet)...
Hmmmm... Maybe next weekend...
Yousty 12-18-2007, 01:19 PM Lol - in all seriousness, I actually still want to do some legendary co-op for a few levels. So if anyone still even plays Halo 3 campaign, let me know.
There's actually a couple levels that I haven't beat on legendary yet so I would definitely be down for going through and completing them. My vacation also starts Friday so just let me know when you want to play, Supa.
SupaSlick 12-18-2007, 01:25 PM Ok Yousty, you're on - i have maybe 3 or 4 that I need to do on legendary co-op.
- now we just need 2 more people (since AblativMeatshld will be away) - and then we'll nail down when.
i've never actually done 4player co-op.
Chrono 12-18-2007, 01:56 PM Id so be up for it. Ive completed them already but i love Halo 3, and i can beat supa's a** in Street Fighter after words
KeavyRain 12-18-2007, 02:38 PM I'm not the best at Halo but if you need a fourth let me know.
AblativMeatshld 12-18-2007, 02:59 PM I should be around xmas eve (in theory), and there's the evenings that next week as well...

Same thing happened to me. I`d be up for Legendary, i havn`t even bothered to try it on Legendary yet, heh.
To the original Poster:
I'm sorry, but why did you have to turn it into a Dear Sister Parody. :( LOL.
At first i didn`t know why there was a giant yellow and white bar on the video either. :p
SupaSlick 12-18-2007, 03:08 PM Yeah, sorry if I caused a complete derail of this thread.
viatrophy 12-18-2007, 03:08 PM Im up for it.
Completed it on legendary numerous times for friends. :p
If you need a 4th let me know!
As i've finished work until the 8th January :D
CaptnKiller 12-18-2007, 04:10 PM Huh! Yes, you read the title correctly. I received my 360 back from the RROD today. From the day I got the 3 red lights, it took 15 days to get the coffin, send it out, and get it back fixed.
I was worried that it would take 3-5 weeks. Now I can enjoy my life again
:o
viatrophy 12-18-2007, 04:11 PM Last time I RROD it took me 30 minutes =]
KeavyRain 12-18-2007, 05:25 PM They're getting better with the turnaround but the best would be a 360 that doesn't break. I remember the stories of 6 week turnarounds back when the system launched.
eskimopirate 12-18-2007, 09:26 PM mine took 9 days... my second one took 2 weeks.
Duffman X18 12-18-2007, 09:46 PM Nice. Mine took about 2 months both times. :(
KeavyRain 12-18-2007, 09:59 PM Nice. Mine took about 2 months both times. :(
You're kidding? Mine was 3 weeks the first time (Because coffin was sent to wrong house and had to be reshipped) and second was two and a half weeks I think. Maybe closer to three but the Thanksgiving holiday was in the middle of that so it slowed it all down.
viatrophy 12-18-2007, 10:23 PM Im yet to know the horror's of the Microsoft warranty policy.
due to most shops round my area. (Game and GameStation), If you take in a RROD'd 360 and proof that you had purchased the console from that shop. (Receipt) they will just replace your 360 with a brand new one and send the old one off. :D
GamerzGirl 12-19-2007, 12:01 AM I'm so lucky...None of my 360's have RRoD'd.
Phew..
Karma is being good to me. :D

Well, it was a launch 360 and the DVD drive was near death. MS put a new one in there as well when they fixed the RROD so they saved me $140 + shipping.
It may be better for some people to never have an xbox get 3 red lights but for me it saved a few bucks!

Yeah, now all of your 360s (you have multiple?) will bite the dust.
I'm betting... tomorrow.

Uh-oh...watch out. Kaz Hirai's gonna show up at your house and drop kick your 360 out a window... to "improve performance"

He put "Speed holes" in my 360.
Supposed to make it go faster!
Spudnik 12-20-2007, 03:06 AM Mine took only a week. I was really lucky. My friends however took him close to three weeks.
ChorleyDominic 12-20-2007, 05:49 AM Gawd if I ever get the dreaded RROD I'm screwed, got mine on a big special deal at Argos (warehouse style shop) - they won't have a clue on XBOX warranty policy. I'm stuck with Microsoft's delightful customer services....

Well, I take care of my things. That's why they don't all RRoD on me. I don't turn them on and leave them on all day. -_-
MightyMutt 12-20-2007, 11:51 AM You think its fast to be without your 360 for 15 days? I do not think thats a great service, ok maybe but not great. I heard when there were recent problems with guitar hero 3 or Rock Band (not sure which one) they did a scheme where they took a optional refundable deposit (given back when they receive your item that needs replacing) and then they post out a replacement straight away. This would be a much better idea for the RRoD cases.
The amount of stupid questions and hoops they make you go through when you clearly have a well known problem is annoying.
Griffin999 12-20-2007, 12:38 PM I got it once, slaped it, restarted it and it was all better

I'm not sure what you mean. For me it was a really simple process for getting my xbox fixed. Just called em up and then they asked for my address and that was about it.
The only annoying thing was Max. Stupid AI bot!
wazomike 12-21-2007, 10:06 PM It took them 2 weeks just to send me the coffin once i sent it to them i got it back in 4 days
serialrocker 12-22-2007, 01:02 PM Sent mine back in November and it took with weekends from the day I called a week and 3 days. Very not bad.

incredible.I haven't been greeted with them yet but it took my friend nearly 2 1/2 weeks.

That is as hilarious and disgusting as Jackass 2.5. Which I just watched.
Spudnik 12-23-2007, 11:09 PM I never liked the Jackass movies. Sadly however old Bill does.............................................. ........................whimper.

dude, no. jus, just no.
Spudnik 12-24-2007, 12:11 AM Ok fine I'll stop. I just hope my Xbox doesn't break again. At least Peter Moore isn't there anymore.
landshark68 01-18-2008, 09:01 AM On the subject of the red ring, how dead were your 360s when you sent them in to Microsoft? My original Premium 360 has started RRoDing, but I can usually resurrect it (most often by not using it for a few days). I have picked up an Arcade to use in the interim (because I had the spare 20G hard drive from the Premium) so I am still playing, but I have been hesitant to send it in to Microsoft on the chance that it wont RRoD when they get it. (It seems to need a hard drive attached to reliably RRoD, but even that isnt a guarantee).
yourshadow 01-26-2008, 01:03 PM Who here has gotten the red rings of death and how many times? I haven't gotten it yet, and hopefully never will.
st0p pr3 01-26-2008, 01:08 PM I have gotten the red rings of death 3 times...and i am currently on my 6th Xbox 360.
the 6th degree 01-26-2008, 02:19 PM Twice.
And disk drives have died twice.
My 5th system better never break down....and be able to make me toast.....
Mitch808 01-26-2008, 05:34 PM I got it once. Then after 1 month with the refurbished one i had to send THAT one back in because it couldn't read disks.
ReD KiLLeR 01-26-2008, 05:34 PM Twice.
The day I got it back played Orange Box for 2 Hours, Then it happened Again.
Waiting for my coffin now.
