View Full Version : Hump-day Update: 4-09-08

About the freshest episode of the podcast ever, this week's show is giddiness wearing a coat made of dread. Too metaphorical? Probably.
We tried to talk through the insane price that gamers are being expected to pay for Rock Band in Europe. We couldn't really arrive at any sort of conclusion other than bewilderment. Giving people a game 6 months late and charging them twice as much for it really doesn't sound like a very good way to create fans.
We also touched on the most recent developments in the Bad Company boycott, that is rapidly outgrowing its origins here on Sarcastic Gamer (and we couldn't be happier).
Finally, we got to celebrate some good news, the arrival of the totally kick ass map pack for CoD4, and why we think it's a totally seperate animal from the offensive move that EA is making with BFBC.
Lono got his hands on a Dual Shock 3 controller and shared his initial thoughts on the device.

naruto20 04-09-2008, 12:24 AM A day early eh?
Tinman 04-09-2008, 12:39 AM JVB will be obliterated.
DemonicDerek 04-09-2008, 01:03 AM I really don't care that MS is using my extra points for interest, because I'd rather not have to spend specific amounts of cash to make sure I stay at 0. Sure it might make my account look more organized. I don't care so yeah... So yeah, I don't care and I don't care and I don't care. As a matter of fact maybe it is the reason why I got such a fast return time of my (dusted) 360. I mean maybe the more interest you give them the faster they return your 360 when you RROD.
heyfling 04-09-2008, 01:16 AM That was a great show. Glad to see the boycott has made it onto both Destructoid and Joystiq. I just hope Lono's prediction is right and Kotaku decides to run a SG Boycott article because then we can finally take the boycott to the next level.
ritterjcat 04-09-2008, 01:36 AM Great hump day update. I loved the end: Kahhhhhhnnnnnnnnn!!!!! I hope to get a dual shock 3 some time this week. And Lono, I totally agree with you on Ratchet and Clank. I've spent the last three weeks playing pretty much nothing but that. Very fun game.
crashcrazy 04-09-2008, 02:36 AM Around were I live I picked up Guitar Hero 3 for 85 euro (the game and guitar) so why is rockband so costly?
OkamiUiriamu 04-09-2008, 05:09 AM Ah, great hump-day updated guys. I plan on getting CoD4 IDK when (Gez Im behind)
viatrophy 04-09-2008, 10:34 AM Great show guys,
and Yes, I am BEYOND pissed about Rock Band. :(
I was so looking forward to that game. :(
Blackswordsman 04-09-2008, 10:40 AM Well Rock Bands not getting my money, what a crock.
mrpuggywuggy 04-09-2008, 12:15 PM Great update show guys.
The value added tax on Rock Band is about £30.00, so Rock Band is £150.00 - $300.00 if you take the VAT off.
That is just an insane price and I can't afford to pay that much for one game.
Biohazared20 04-09-2008, 02:06 PM Great Up-date guys, its cool that you guys talked about The Outrageous price of Rock Band on the new COD4 map pack and the ending was funny to
MightyMutt 04-09-2008, 04:18 PM Good podcast as ever and what the hell is up with Rockband.
Someone needs to teach EA Europe maths!
I smell a european boycott coming on. :lipssealed:
The good news is we don't have to do anything! They have priced it out of most people's hands anyway.
Damn you EA, first no USA/Euro link up in Army of TuTu, then the Bad Company bullshit, now this latest rip off.
Just when I thought I was beginning to like you. I guess some Company's are just born to be Bad.

randomperson 04-09-2008, 11:46 PM The Rockband winner lives in Europe, I somehow have a feeling that EA: Bad Company was involved in this.
SpiralGray 04-10-2008, 10:06 AM Am I the only one who sees a little hypocrisy in the issues with Battlefield and Rock Band?
It seems like on one hand Americans want to proclaim what a perfect system capitalism is. They'll turn it into a national pride thing and start spouting platitudes like, "America, love it or leave it", or "Move to Russia if you don't like it" or other nonsense.
But when a company tries to charge what they think the market will bear, everyone gets up in arms about it.
These are video games. They aren't food, water, or shelter. If a company is doing something you don't like or charging too much the answer is simple, "don't buy it." The answer isn't "buy it but complain about it a lot", it's "don't buy it."
Complain about it if you like, even try to organize people to not buy it, but at least recognize that you're not exactly talking about one of life's necessities. If you want to make a real difference, get school funding or health care changed.

Besides the fact that the boycott is over (check front page), that's a major distortion of what they're talking about. It's not a matter of "what they think the market will bear", it's a matter of "how much content can we leave out of a game at launch and charge extra for." If they think the market can handle it, then for goodness' sakes just make extra guns AFTER the game is released. If they have the content ready to go at launch, there's no reason to charge extra for the additional content PLUS $60 for what they've made by doing so an incomplete game.
Also, you don't think we care about health care or school funding? What does that have ANYTHING to do with this? Just because we hold video games high on our list of priorities doesn't mean that we don't care about our country. That's one of the more ridiculous things I've heard! It's like saying, "Man, people today are so apathetic. They go to work and school when they could instead be planting trees or recycling or such. Don't they care about the environment?" Both things are held at equal importance to (some) people, but the two are completely seperate.
Also, it's not just a matter of "don't buy it." Without a boycott, there would be no awareness of the issue at hand, and countless others would ignorantly buy the game. EA would then see no reason to listen to us, since they can make money off of nickel and diming us, and other companies would follow suit. A year from now, you could expect a good 60% of big games to use this money-making tactic.
They'll turn it into a national pride thing and start spouting platitudes like, "America, love it or leave it"So typical of someone who's only seen the radicals and extremists ranting and raving to assume that the rest of the group is exactly the same. Not true.
...
Erm...great show guys? :undecided:
codinthepocket 04-10-2008, 12:42 PM It's the final countdown!
