What is the most innovative game of all time? I searched and didn't find this. So, I was just wondering, what is THE most innovative game ever?
I would have to say Portal. The free portal shooting and jumping between portals in any shootable area, with gravity and physics in effect also, make the game innovative really well. My choice. What's yours?

EDIT: Thread 4400...

Pong. It's nothing to you now, but considering how it's the foundation for every interactive media to date, I'd say that's pretty innovative for the late 1900's.

As for recent releases, I'll agree with Portal.

This is an extremely difficult decision. For old games I would have to go with Super Smash Bros. because it was the first good fighting game.

Recently though I would have to say Portal. I'm not jumping on the bandwagon because I thought for about 20 minutes and I realized that all recent games aren't really innovative just highly polished cough Bioshock uncough...:grin:

well I would say pong but since that is the first it cannot really innovate on gaming because it was the first video game so id have to go with . . . . . .the first Wolfenstein game, really started off the whole FPS genre which as influenced many games. O and the GTA series, That redefined the open world genre

hmmm I would have to go with Super Mario 64, because without it I don't think 3d platformers would be as good as they are today.
That or the orginal Smash Bros. because it brought a unique, and new fighting style to the genre of fighting games.

What the hell who's resurecting all of these old threads?
1. Doom
2. Super mario 64
3. Wolfenstien
4. Sims
5. Halo :CE
I don't think Portal was that innovative. For somthing to be innovative it has to have games that copy it or use things from it

I ressurected about three threads because
a)I thought they were good threads,
b)I couldn't find anything to post on that was recent, and
c)Didn't want to create a duplicate thread that would get locked.

Diablo II was innovative in the sense that it created the half-MMO genre, which Hellgate: London, Guild Wars, and upcomming game The Agency were and will be based off of.

My top 5 in most innovative...

5. Tetris because it defined addictive puzzle gaming that led to a boom in the puzzle games of today.

4. Mortal Kombat because it was the first game to feature extreme levels of graphic violence in a fighting game.

3. Dance Dance Revolution because it was the first machine game that brought in gaming fitness and dance simulation.

2. Wii Sports because it introduced real-time interactive gaming that literally sucks you into the action.

...and the most innovative of all time...

1. Super Mario Bros. because it was the platform game that began a new era in videogames and set a new standard in adventure games.

You forget most of the people on here are kids whos first system was either a PS1, or an N64.

I think A Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past was amazing and the whole light world dark world puzzles were amazing.

And Metal Gear Solid on the PS1. How many people HONESTLY didn't go "WTF" when you had to look on the back of the case for Meryl's codec. Tons of my friends called me cause they rented the game from Blockbuster and didn't have the official case. This was before Gamefaqs.

Ok I am going to name a current generation game, while it may not be the most innovative game of all time it is still pretty damn innovative.

Metroid Prime 3, for showing that FPS controls on the Wii can work and will work, it was very smooth and it worked well.

Portal was a pretty innovative game, I agree.

But of all time, maybe Super Mario Bros. because it was the first platformer, though I could be wrong. And in a VERY technical sense, Duck Hunt was the first FPS ever made.

Are you stupid? So because a game doesn't get a sequel it's not good or innovative?

And for your information, there is a sequel in the works as Valve is looking for a voice actor for the new game, which will focus on the creator of the company that made the Portal Gun.

And there are alot of innovative mods that use the Source Engine, as well as games. Look at Left 4 Dead. That game is going to kick major ass.

Ultima Underworld, for sneakilty inventing the FPS RPG, before the FPS.

Seriously kids, look it up. Fully 3D interactive game with RPG stats, buying and selling equipment, epic plot, interactive NPCs, and out a few months before Wolfenstien 3D, and much better graphics. You could even jump. :)

Other than that, Elite. Essentially created the sandbox "make your own game" type of play which developers still talk about as their new games key feature today.

You misunderstand me, you can't call a game very innovative when there haven't been any other games based off of it, I'm not talking sequel a game doesn't need to be innovative at all to get a sequel. L4D does look awesome but I don't consider that the fact it uses the same engine a sign of innovation as it's being made by the same company.

Before this thread I was in the best graphic novel thread and your were rippin on kids who just heard of Watchmen through the new movie. So? How else are we supposed to hear about old comics? Our parents?

So if everyone else misses it, it's not innovative, huh? I cant buy that, as Id rather see innovation rated on it's own merits, not on the merit of if others are smart enough to see/copy it.

It's NOT being made by the same company at all. Nuclear Monkey Software made a game called Narbacular Drop (Look it up) and its basically a game with the two portals that lead to solving puzzles etc, then Valve contacted them to dev Portal.

L4D is being developed by Turtle Rock Studios, the people who made AI in Counter-Strike and ported it to the Xbox and made maps for Counter-Strike: Source.

It's only inspired most of them because it makes an absolutely obscene amount of money. There's very little that's truly innovtive about WoW. Like most Blizzard products, it simply takes what came before (in this case Everquest), and makes it shine. Nothing wrong with that, but it's not innovative in my book.

Haven't seen Goldeneye mentioned yet, it deserves one. Hell, CoD/BF:BC/R6:Vegas all still use the control style created for Goldeneye (left trigger aim, right trigger shoot). The control style and split-screen co-op led to pretty much any other FPS on a console.

Oh, and Donkey Kong deserves a mention for first platformer and first Miyamato game too.

I would have to say Goldeneye for the N64, althought some people say it doesn't age well I think it set the bar for FPS's the awesome games such as Halo: Combat Evolved and Call of Duty 4 would have lacked major elements if Rare did not make this game. Also its one of the few GOOD Movie games.

It's difficult to say what's innovative.

Prey was innovative in it's use of portals and gravity effects (though technically Metroid beat them to the gravity punch).

Portal gave you the ability to determine where the portals go, so that was pretty neat.

Half Life 2 gave us amazing physics.

Assassin's Creed gave us the most amazing freerunning I've ever seen in a game, expanding wonderfully on the Prince of Persia system.

Far Cry gives us graphics.

Oh, and Pong was the first commercially-viable videogame, but before Pong there was an unnamed missile simulator that used analog circuitry and a cathode ray tube. More followed.
