I heard about this "project64". What is it about? I don't understand how it works. I'm not gonna risk getting it, I was just curious. What is it?
None of you should get this btw. It looks way too risky to even go near. I would just like to say that I do not endorse this thing in any way, and we, as a forum, do not support any illegal activity. We appreciate any concern about the legalities of this thing.
This thread is mainly for informational purposes only and is not meant to be used as a publicising means. Thank you. If the moderators do not like this link, they are very welcome to shut it down. I was merely curious at to what it is. I heard about it but I don't know what it does really.

*Being very cautious* Project64 is an emulator, in that it emulates the Nintendo 64 Platform on a PC. Certain people out in the gaming community worked out a way to obtain the ROM files from the N64's games, and play them on the PC using the PJ64 interface. Zsnes and Virtual Boy are other examples of emulators, emulating the Super Nintendo and the GB & GBA respectively.
Distribution of an emulation of a licensed platform (such as the N64) is illegal, and I do not suggest that anyone begin to delve into the world of emulation without long and serious contemplation of the risks.
Emulators defend their practice by putting forward the argument that, becuase the consoles are no longer produced,it is essential that we (as gamers) give the next generation (and the curerent generation) a chance to experience (or re-live) the amazing games and applications that characterised the rise of gaming.
As you may have guessed, I may or may not own an unspecified number of emulators and games, which of course do not exist. And I never said that.

We should probably just leave this thread to die. There are loads of other places on the net to discuss this kinda thing.

Technically emulation and roms are perfectly legal. The same way bit-torrent is. Legally if you own the game you can make as many copies as you want, as long as they are backups and you do not distribute them to anyone who does not own the game. The basic argument that is made for em/roms is that some one who owned at one time a older system and game and lost it due to a hardware failure, will now be able to replace with a em/rom.
The problem comes from people who do not own the game. They are stealing even if these games are no longer made or supported in any ways. They still have not become freeware. Until such a point as they do, em/roms will always be am area few are willing to speak about.

Thanks zbiggie, I've changed that.
I personally am of the opinion that, despite the fact that the games and systems for consoles such as the Amiga, C64 and SNES are no longer supported, games companies will never release them as freeware, because there is always the outside chance that they may find a way to make a profit off them.
