View Full Version : Persuade me to purchase a ps3?
viatrophy 10-24-2007, 10:52 PM Yes, im being serious here.
Sometime into the begining of next year i was thinking about buying a playstation 3.
(Start of next year due to after christmas deals:D)
I want people who own one to give me 5 reasons to purchase it.
Any help would be great.
+ What games would persuade me to buy it?
Thankyou. :D
JAcK0R 10-24-2007, 10:58 PM If this had been a year ago, I'd have told you to just not get one. However, there is some good news finally for PS3 owners. Here are a few reasons:
1. Ratchet and Clank: Tools of destruction
2. Eye of Judgment
3. Home
4. LittleBigPlanet
5. Blu-ray seems to be winning the format war
6. Warhawk
7. Rothbart will love you forever and a day
CM Cameron 10-25-2007, 12:13 AM 1. Considering everything that you get inside the box, the PS3 is a great deal (especially the 40 gig).
2. A incredible '08 lineup. Gran Tourismo 5, Unreal Tournament 3, LittleBigPlanet, to name a few. Not to mention the rumoured Resistance 2 and God of War 3.
3. Excellent Blu-Ray player.
4. Free online.
5. Despite what people may say, the PS3 also has a strong lineup of games currently.

well the 40GB does seem nice, but seeing as the 80GB is now at $500 (don't know how long it's going to last, but it's really sweet that they dropped the price again) plus you get it bundled with Motorstorm.
Yeah, it may not be the greatest game, but it's definitely a lot of fun.
Warhawk will definitely be a nice choice as well. Specially since they are coming out with 2 patches by the end of the year to fix and implement a lot of stuff. The first patch will be done by the end of this month.
Folklore is a nice reason to get it, if you like japanese action/adventure games.
If you have a PSP, that's another reason to get the PS3. They seem to be really integrating the two.
Rachet and Clank and Uncharted are top reasons to get it.
MGS4 next year ;)
Little Big Planet
Killzone 2 (So far it is shaping up to be a sweet game)
If you are still skeptical, hold off until the holiday game reviews come in. If they seem good enough for you, then by all means get the ps3 this holiday considering the 5 free blu-ray deal ends in January.
Well I'm out. Eye of Judgment gets delivered to me tomorrow and I have a ton of work to do before I get to play it. Sleep is somewhere in that schedule.
Legendtaker117 10-25-2007, 02:22 PM 2. A incredible '08 lineup. Gran Tourismo 5, Unreal Tournament 3, LittleBigPlanet, to name a few. Not to mention the rumoured Resistance 2 and God of War 3.
I dont want to come in here and start a huge argument, but I just wanted to say something cause this was kinda bothering me. Unreal Tournament 3 is also coming to the 360, now I dont know if you were refering to all games coming to PS3, but with the other exclusives around it thats what it looked like you meant.
5. Blu-ray seems to be winning the format war
I would like to see some proof of this, as from my knowledge, they are still in a close battle.

It's true that UT3 will eventually be a multiplatform game, but it will be released on the PS3 first, making it a timed exclusive, so it still counts in the list. If we want to get technical though, the PC is truly the platform that gets UT3 exclusive, since it is still coming out this year.
CM Cameron 10-25-2007, 02:48 PM I would like to see some proof of this, as from my knowledge, they are still in a close battle.
I completely missed this part of your post, hahahah. The last I heard, as far as the HD format war goes, there are a lot more Blu-Ray players out there than HD-DVD players. Due mostly to the fact that the PS3 functions as a Blu-Ray player. But, as for who is winning now, and who eventually will win the HD format, I couldn't care less.
KeavyRain 10-25-2007, 02:48 PM Last I heard DVD was the king of the formats.
As for getting a PS3...let's see...Oh, I know. Women find the PS3 incredibly sexy.
Buy a PS3 and score with the ladies.

So that's what it is. I couldn't figure out for the life of me why I was constantly being confronted by women all the time, as I had stopped using Axe months ago.

Im not switching formats, Im stickin with DVD. but its kinda funny since Trandformers on HD-DVD is the top selling High Definiton disk in US selling about 250,000 or something like that when the DVD version sold like 83 million or something. that might be in cash, but the difference is so far apart. that just proves that both formats will fail.
rothbart 10-25-2007, 03:41 PM Okay, it seems these "convince me" posts are getting more and more common, I should work up a "canned" response. Ultimately, all I want to do is inform you because the last thing I want to hear about is someone convinced to buy a PS3 that for whatever reason regrets it and becomes one of those "I owned a PS3, sold it 3 weeks later, call me when <insert stupid reason by obviously uninformed asshat that spent hundreds of dollars before he knew what he was getting into>" people. That said, depending on your likes/needs, there are plenty of reasons to join the ever growing group of PS3 owners.
To start off off with, you need to think about whether you're going to want PS2 backwards compatibility in your PS3. You'll also need to weigh whether 2 or 4 USB ports matter, or an internal memory card reader is important either. I've listed these things because they can help you target the best model for you. Now the 360 fanboys will love to snicker at this section and point out how ridiculous it is that there are so many confusing PS3 models, but I'd simply say STFU and look at your own confusing collection of models. Tell me someone buying a Core or Arcade is getting a good deal or making an informed decision (also tell me how many people you personally know that those models are the "best" choice for).
If you own a PSP (or are considering getting one), a lot of additional PS3 "perks" open up, Remote Play access over the internet to your media collection is pretty slick! You can even set your PS3 to do Folding@home work while it's waiting for you to connect remotely. On top of that, you can even access the PS Store remotely to queue up downloads while you're at work... a nice timesaver when a hot new demo comes out like the Ratchet & Clank Future demo that was 1.6GB and was the target of hundreds of thousands of simultaneous downloads... ie. not lightning fast in the evening time. You can also play PSOne downloaded games on your PS3 or PSP (you download them through your PS3 currently)
If you have an HDTV (you'd think that's almost a given, but sadly I don't even own one yet), then you may value that the PS3 is an excellent Blu-ray movie player and upscaling DVD player. The same cannot be said about the 360. Obviously the 360 doesn't play Blu-ray, but by many accounts, it's a really crappy DVD player. It plays HD-DVDs well, but not DVDs (again, I don't have an HDTV so I'm going on what people on the net are saying and reporting (http://gizmodo.com/gadgets/home-entertainment/xbox-360s-dvd-playback-stunningly-bad-233490.php)).
If you have a 7.1 audio system, many PS3 games support uncompressed 7.1 surround sound. While I have a 7.1 system, I don't have 7.1 speakers, so I take the amazing sound I get from my 5.1 and imagine it somehow sounding better.
Games that are out: Resistance: Fall of Man, MotorStorm, Ninja Gaiden Sigma, Heavenly Sword (this game is excellent, it's just short), Eye of Judgement, Warhawk, Ratchet & Clank Future, Calling All Cars, Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection, Super Stardust HD, and Everyday Shooter are all excellent PS3 exclusives that are available for purchase today. There are also several multiplatform titles that if you don't already have a 360 are worthy of playing: Oblivion, NHL 08, Rainbox 6 Vegas, Virtua Fighter 5, GRAW 2, Skate, NBA 2K8, Fight Night Round 3, DiRT and more.
Games that are coming out exclusive to the PS3: Uncharted: Drake's Fortune, Haze, Killzone 2, Unreal Tournament 3 (only console version announced with mouse/keyboard option and downloadable user mods), Metal Gear Solid 4, Final Fantasy XIII, Wipeout HD, SOCOM: Confrontation, Gran Turismo 5, Metal Gear Online, LittleBigPlanet, Afrika, God of War 3 (rumored in the latest EGM to be in production), White Knight Story, iNFAMOUS and more (depending on how far out you want to go).
Depending on what region you live in, there are several projects like PlayTV where you will be able to get external tuners for your PS3 to watch TV and use it as a DVR, or order Video On Demand (this is Europe only for now), Australia is testing a music download service, Sony has also mentioned several times they're working up convergence plans to tie their different divisions together... so Sony movies, music and TV via the PS3 and by Remote Play extension, the PSP.
There are plenty more reasons, but I think I've hit enough key ones right there. One other thing I would point out is how long and far their support has come. Look at the lifespan of the PSOne, look at the lifespan of the PS2, look at the functionality of the PSP at launch compared to now... Sony will be there to support the PS3 for quite some time and I foresee a lot of functionality still being added to the PS3 during its lifetime that we probably can't even imagine yet.
One last thing with regards to Blu-ray movie playback. This holiday, even if Toshiba's $199 HD-DVD player sells well, it's highly unlikely those sales will make a dent in the PS3 install base this year and as PS3 sales pick up due to the game library getting better/bigger, Blu-ray players installed by stand alone machines and mostly PS3s will far surpass Xbox 360 add-on drives and standalone HD-DVD drives. Most people won't intentionally go out and buy an HD-DVD drive to get into HD movies if they're already got a PS3 in the house, they'll simply start buying BR movies. The 5-free BR movies deal is good for purchase made between now and 1/31/2008. Once the exclusivity deal with Dreamworks/Paramount ends, those two camps will likely go back to being dual-platform unless the HD-DVD consortium wants to continue to rent their exclusivity. Blu-ray on the other hand has nearly twice the titles coming out for the rest of the year including ALL Disney titles, so while they have Transformers and Shrek the Third tied up, Blu-ray gets Spidey 3, Die Hard 4, Ratatouille, Meet the Robinsons, and all the other Disney titles. The Blu-ray selection (while not complete) is better than HD-DVD. So you'd think people making "informed" purchases should see that as well.
viatrophy 10-25-2007, 03:54 PM Thankyou Rothbart.
Im getting more and more tempted to buy one.
But im going to wait till January to purchase it.
Hopefully some more Console + Game deals come out.
Kiljoy 10-25-2007, 04:36 PM Im not switching formats, Im stickin with DVD. but its kinda funny since Trandformers on HD-DVD is the top selling High Definiton disk in US selling about 250,000 or something like that when the DVD version sold like 83 million or something. that might be in cash, but the difference is so far apart. that just proves that both formats will fail.
Yeahhh both formats will nto fail, chances are people at this time are just wary of upgrading and/or don't have HD capabilities, they are turned off by the format war because they don't want to back the loser, and as far as sales go Blu-Ray is winning.
P.S. wasn't spidey 3 sony pictures? though either way it's blu-ray.
rothbart 10-25-2007, 06:28 PM P.S. wasn't spidey 3 sony pictures? though either way it's blu-ray.
Yes it was and the Blu-ray version will be the pack-in movie for the 40GB PS3 next month, I mean next week! I haven't seen it yet, but I can assure you I would've rather had Spiderman 3 than Talladega Nights.
Garwalker 10-25-2007, 06:50 PM How can you not like Talladega Nights. That is just unamerican.
Ricky Bobby: Dear Lord baby Jesus, or as our brothers in the south call you, jesuz, we thank you so much for this bountiful harvest of Dominos, KFC, and the always delicious Taco Bell. I just want to take time to say thank you for my family. My two beautiful, beautiful, handsome stricking sons, Walker, and Texas Ranger, or TR as we call him. And of course my red hot smokin' wife Carley, who is a stone cold fox.
Cal Naughton, Jr.: mmm...
Ricky Bobby: Dear tiny infant Jesus...
Carley Bobby: Hey, um... you know sweetie, Jesus did grow up. You don't always have to call him baby. It's a bit odd and off puttin' to pray to a baby.
Ricky Bobby: Well look, I like the Christmas Jesus best, and I'm sayin grace. When you say grace, you can say it to grown up Jesus, or teenage Jesus, or bearded Jesus, or whoever you want.
darkwonders 10-25-2007, 07:04 PM Don't you put your evil on me Ricky Bobby!
XD
Couldn't resist.
rothbart 10-25-2007, 07:05 PM I watched it... once. I would never buy a Blu-ray movie to watch once.
Maybe it was the mood/crowd I was with, but I found it incredibly underwhelming.
Kiljoy 10-25-2007, 07:15 PM it's the type of comedy you only want to watch once, kinda like Borat.

It plays PS1 games. It's called Backwards compatibility and it's awesome! You can even use your PS1 peripherals.
You can watch DVDs with it. It's even going to have a peripheral with it that acts like a remote control.
Dual Shock 2 Analog Controller - Even the buttons are analog now
It's going to have a hard drive and ethernet adapter that will let you play games online. I'm sure everyone will get the hard drive when it comes out.
Oh wait. Did you say PS3?
Happy birthday PS2!

CM Cameron 10-26-2007, 09:28 PM i refuse to watch it because i like will ferrell... i just wish he did more movies like stranger than fiction.
I really liked Stranger Than Fiction. If Will Ferrel plays in more movies like that, I might actually start respecting him as an actor.
Garwalker 10-27-2007, 12:23 PM Yeah, that really has worked well for Jim Carrey.
Ala Douche 10-27-2007, 01:12 PM Yeah, that really has worked well for Jim Carrey.
i can't tell if you're being sarcastic or not, but i think his best movie is eternal sunshine of the spotless mind. i thought he was good in 23, but i didn't think the movie itself was all that good... plus he was great in the truman show. i really like that he's doing movies like these and actually showing he's a good actor.
Kiljoy 10-27-2007, 01:34 PM yeah but when I was a kid I loved The Mask, I still think it's kind of funny.
Garwalker 10-27-2007, 07:25 PM I agree Ala Douche. Even though I do have to say Carrey's comedies have been disappointing as of late.
Hopefully Will Ferrell can keep up the comedy genious. The first 3/4 of Ricky Bobby are just as funny as Anchorman. Unfortunately it really lost steam the last part of the movie. Most of Will Ferrell's movies get better with age. Anchorman is way funnier to me now then when I first saw it. Same thing with Old School.
QueenSavvy 10-27-2007, 07:44 PM 1- 40 gb memory

3-exclusive games (e.g MGS4)

4- graphics
5- Home
Ala Douche 10-27-2007, 10:28 PM agreed... old school is one of his best... i also really liked him in wedding crashers.
tmsize 10-28-2007, 01:55 PM You can watch the 300!

I think you're mistaken... Transformers is HD-DVD only, Disney is Blu-ray only...
Emophia 10-28-2007, 03:43 PM Honestly, if you need to be persuaded to buy a PS3, then don't bother... That goes for any console...
Spudnik 10-28-2007, 04:18 PM I disagree emophia. In order to buy something you had to be persuaded at some point along the line. All he wants is just some of the pluses of the PS3.

That's pretty weak... but to be fair, if someone wants persuaded to get a 360:
Very popular + highly likely to break (multiple times) + a bazillion first person shooters + fee based online multiplayer = Baaaaaaa
