Honestly I am disgusted at the new update. I have never trash talked or done any thing "illegal" but Im just not comfurtable being monitored and recorded. Treating every one like a criminal is not going to stop piracy it might cut down on some of the idiots but when has calling someone every word in the book killed anyone?

If they want to sell MY custom content and not pay me fine, don't make me pay for new map packs or updates. My ethernet cable is now because of the TOS unplugged. The whole TOS is BS imo.

Oh, great show guys.

We all know why they recall LBP, because of two line Quran.

Here are the line:
"كل نفس ذائقة الموت" ("kollo nafsin tha'iqatol mawt", literally: 'Every soul shall have the taste of death')

and

"كل من عليها فان" ("kollo man alaiha fan", literally: 'All that is on earth will perish')

With that two line it's really painting a bad picture for Islam and the two line that were use was taken out of context.

By using that line I can under stand why most of the Muslin community are offended.

Well I'm just giving my two cents about what I think =D

Frawls rap just had to come on when I was on a busy bus trying not to laugh out hysterically... Weekly feature?

Good episode again this week, covered a lot of ground as usual and I actually found the user agreement section quite interesting (Something I never thought I'd say...)

Personally, I don't see Sony abusing it but it's just safe for them to have the clause there. I can see them releasing a disc with maybe all the best user content for LBP for those who can't connect to the internet and if they did, then it wouldn't bother me. I'm probably too trusting though...

Oh the Inhumanity! My streak is broken! Ah well, you guys should've called "That's what she said" waaaayyy more than ya did, but it still brought a smile to my face.

On a side note, I sincerely doubt anyone would bother with taking legal action against LBP. I may just be pulling this out of thin air but with the massive amount of levels being produced and simply the nature of the game in general, anyone who takes beef with Media Molecule over a pseudo-mario or sonic level has no soul.

You're right. We'll all be turned away from Muslim because we heard the words كل نفس ذائقة الموت. Man, those are soooo easy for 99% of gamers to understand... I mean, being fluent in arabic (is that the language?) is a prerequesite for being a gamer!

Now, look at it in context: The song is two years old. It's playing in the background of ONE level out of like 60. (I'm LBP-illiterate, so forgive my probably wrong game-related numbers) I repeat: the background. To boot, it's in arabic. I dare anyone here to tell me what this video is saying without looking up the lyrics.

w3wef_F_xvg

In the background. I have a hard enough time understanding some english songs normally, much less arabic music playing amongst other noise and chaos. While playing a game, with my full attention not devoted to the song's lyrics.

I'm not hating on Muslims here, but I think it's totally petty to have the game recalled given the above conditions. I can understand how some might not like phrases from their holy book set to music (kind of...), but you'd have to be LOOKING for ways to get angry at something if you're going to get up in arms about that. Don't hate on the game, hate on whoever made the song. Hate on whoever distributes the song be it iTunes, Amazon mp3, Napster, the Zune Store, or whatever record company put in on CD to begin with. Heaven (pardon) forbid that someone should use a two year old song in a video game. How does putting a song in a video game make it more offensive? I'm a Christian, and I don't appreciate songs about satan or demonic content, but you could go ahead and put it in a video game. I just wouldn't buy it.

Seriously. The whole thing is beyond me. Once again, I'm not hating on Muslims. I just don't see how the heck (pardon again) you could logically do something like that. It defies all reasonable thought.

By the way, what gives with calling me an idiot savant? There's nothing savant about me!

I have a couple of friends who are fluent in Arabic... one of them is a big gamer.

I think a lot of people are forgetting that although Muslims are a minority in America they aren't in other countries... I'm quite certain I'm right in thinking that predominantly Muslim countries will also receive LBP... and they can't just recall discs just from X country...

Sony want to avoid any potential controversies, especially on a game like LBP... I think they ultimately made the right move... a day 0 patch isn't really adequate enough sadly. Nothing might have come out of it... but something might have... it's unlikely but still something Sony as a company should avoid.

After listening to the song... I really won't miss it... Nothing to do with the lyrics but just because I think it's a little rubbish...

Yeah it's a background music for A LEVEL and you can hardly notice it while playing the game and (let's say) 80% of the gamer won't notice it at all, but the other 20% will notice it and with in that 5% of gamer whey will think oh they are mocking the Quran sue Sony.

Have you ever been in a situation where your playing a game and your digging the background music and thought to your self "I'm digging the music and I want this music on my iPod". Well I have and it was for Kingdome Hearts 2 where I was fighting Sephiroth and his theme song played and I was oh my I need to get that song. That song was stuck in my head and so was the lyric for that song till this day.

I agree that it's petty that they have to recall the game and it's giving a bad name to Islam at the same time, now people are going to blame Muslim for the game getting delayed and giving some hater another reason to hate.

If your saying "hate on whoever made the song and everyone that distributes it" that’s a big stretch, the deference about the game and buying the music is two totally deferent things. The big deference is if you’re going out and looking for the music that's your choice, but if it's in the game your force to listen to it (you can mute it if you don't want to listen to it).

Like I said in my previous comment was "taken out of context", if I was to translate the song and see the word "Every soul shall have the taste of death" and "All that is on earth will perish" I would freak out and say "that LBP is a satanic game and wants every one to die", but it's clearly not.

Well ploogle if you don't know why they did this in the first place let me (try my best and) explain it. It's Sony covering their ass from getting sue and tarnishing LBP's name, think about it if LBP gets a bad rep it will effect the sales of the game (and Frawlz would win the bet) and Sony and the production house that did the game would lose allot of money.

But that’s just my humble opinion

I don't think it's because Sony/Media Molecule are worried that English speaking people would understand or be offended by the lyrics guys... remember, for most titles, Sony's gone to a "master once, release everywhere" plan. Sure, packaging may differ from region to region, but the discs are largely the same image... so it's not a situation where they can look and say "This is fine to release in English speaking territories, but we need to fix it before it goes out to regions that might actually understand this", it's a simple "we want to error on the side of caution and not offend anybody" move. The delay sucks, but it should be pretty easy to understand even if you would've never considered making the decision yourself.

The language/religion affected here, as PirateFlame points out, aren't in the minority everywhere...

Lono_Lives
10-29-2008, 04:36 PM
My two cents: Why be mad that they delayed the game so they wouldn't offend people. Who cares if the offended party is the minority. If anything, Sony and other companies should take EXTRA care with smaller minorities with regard to their products because they have less pull to get things done than larger majorities (i.e. christians). Because the Muslim minority has far less power over all to influence big companies, I applaud Sony for taking the proper steps to take out offending content, even if it is one small part of a HUGE game.

And they're not recalling it to avoid being sued, they're recalling it to avoid controversy over an innocuous platformer with a cute cuddly mass market figure head that's gonna be turned into cartoons, sequels, movies, etc.

Glad to hear (in the podcast) that others think this recall is rediculous, now as I read some posts it appears you guys may think otherwise as you are sticking up for sony's decision. the one thing I haven't heard anyone mention is that the muslim community that pointed it out were not necessarily offended and all they asked was that the game be patched (as reported by kotaku) so the offended asked that it be patched, the developer prepares a patch and the producer insists that its removed entirely, blow the man.

Understanding it, not getting mad over it, and saying it's what we'd do are three distinctly different matters though... I was disappointed (that I didn't get the game on time), but I completely understood and wasn't mad. I'm not sure what I would've done had it been my call and I had all the info they had when they made their call.

WTF are you talking about... Sharia, muslim law, forbids using passages from their holy book in music. What "muslim community" are you talking about.

Do you even realize that this game is going to be sold ALL OVER THE WORLD?

Good grief man. There are significant muslim populations in the UK, France, Germany and many other countries in the EU, not to mention Muslim countries where this game will be for sale.

The latest word from Sony (http://www.destructoid.com/sony-littlebigplanet-recall-an-act-of-respect-109651.phtml) over the reasons was a smooth PR move IMO... "respect"

It's entirely possible to "respect" something you don't agree with... to "respect" something you wouldn't do yourself... "respect" others' sensitivity to things that don't bother you...

How about we get back to talkin' about Ep. 26? It's probably better than 27 turned out... *foreheadsmack*

There's nothing for sony to get sued over. It was all about promoting their next big thing and keeping the controversy out of it.

@ lono_lives HAHAHAHAHA, I'm not pissed nor do I even care that Little Gay Planet was recalled, I don't even have a PS3 nor do I want one cause of a game that has open user content, sure the ideas cool, maybe I'll snag it in a year or 2 when I finally get a PS3 and need a decent game out of such a small library of decent games to play. I was thinking when I said very few muslims would even notice or care as it was a specific comunity that noticed it and brought it up and asked sony to "PATCH" the game, not reprint it. If your so smart how bout you tell me where this surfaced as "There are significant muslim populations in the UK, France, Germany and many other countries in the EU, not to mention Muslim countries where this game will be for sale." which one of those contacted sony? I just hate when managers insist on something the customer nor the employee want to do, in this case a simple patch would have sufficed.

Why do "muslims" have to contact Sony first before Sony takes action?

TylDurden
11-03-2008, 04:38 PM
someone had to point it out and ask for it to be changed. Why would sony take action for something they were not aware of, or something they thought was innocent, someone must have told them they were offended and why.
